Metal scraping sound in wheel

Metal scraping sound in wheel
Wonder if someone can give a diagnosis....
Have a 98 Civic LX. Was driving to work this morning and as soon as I get on the road I start hearing this metal on metal scraping sound coming from the front right wheel. One of those horrid nails-on-the-chalkboard sounds that makes you want to expel pea soup from your mouth.
It's the worst from about 30 - 50mph. Faster than that it either stops or gets so fast and high pitched that I can't hear it any more. Slower than that it's really not noticable.
Car is driving fine....it's not pulling and I can't "feel" the noise in the wheel.
?????

no wheel bearing would be the opposite , you wouldnt hear it until highway speeds , it would howl. sounds like you either need brake pads , or your dust shield is getting rotten , comming loose and rubbing your spindle.

Re: (fms1day)
I 5th it...lol I've had this happen more than a few times with some of my past cars. Jack the car up and spin the wheel with your hand. You should be able to hear exactly where it's coming from.

I had a rock (pebble) get lodged between the rotor and shield which made it screech like I had run the pads down to the metal. You might be lucky and just find something wedged in there.

There's always that possibility. I live on a gravel road. I'll check that as well.

Looks like the lodged rock takes it. At least it seems that way.
Was backing out of the driveway last night to take the car to my dad's garage to check it out and it was scraping like mad in reverse. When I got into the road, shifted to drive and started forward, I heard a rattling sound like something was falling inside the wheel. Seems that changing directions a few times dislodged the rock and it came free on it's own.
Still took the wheel off and checked it out. No damage to the rotor, and no noises today so I guess it was no big deal.
Thanks for the rock tip.
