Mechanic says I need a new fuel pump?
So, problem is my car randomly decides it doesnt want to start.
It will crank and crank and not catch.
However sometimes it DOES start, and runs without a single problem.
Sometimes it starts and dies right away.
I took it to a mechanic, he looked at it for 10 minutes and told me its a fuel pump issue, and to replace the pump.
That sound right? Anyway to check?

this happened to a co-worker of mine. she took it to a mechanic and he said the same thing, she need a fuel pump. i told her chances are it just the main relay, she doubted my skills, and lucky for her i had a spare relay laying around, swapped it out and now the car has no starting problems.
check the main relay.

depending what year civic.
92-95, it is found above the hood release.
96-00, found under the glove box.
one way to tell is, if you hear the relay click when you turn the key (not when you start the car, just turned on, when the dash lights up), then the relay is working.
if it is clicking but no prime from the pump, chances are the pump is what's bad.

its a 92 civic. Anyone have a diagram or something so I can locate it, or where to order one? I don't hear any clicking when trying to start the car, perhaps becuase it is drowned out by other sounds?

Order it from slhondaparts.com or hondapartsdeals.com (I can vouch for hondaparts deals, they own, and are cheaper). Both are "Honda Genuine Parts."
It's very very simple, you take out the back seat, on the 92's there wasn't a 60/40 fold down like in the '96-'00 - so the whole seat comes down as one piece. On each corner there's a bracket w/ 2 10mm bolts on it, unbolt them and the seat back can slide out.
Then there's (I think) 1 more bolt that holds the bottom in and it "unclips" (you have to jimmy it a bit b/c the clip is weird) but it pops right out, then that slides out.
Once you have the seat out, you're looking at the service hatch, 4 screws or bolt (forgot which) and the plate pops off, then you're looking at the gas tank and 2 pods, one is the fuel sender unit, the other is your fuel pump...the one with the big fuel line going to it is your fuel pump...
Unbolt it (a few bolts) and pull it out, disconnect it, put it asside, put the new one in, connect it, put the service cover back on, put the seats back in, and you're ready to go.
PS:
Word of advice, don't put the bolt that's in the middle of the bottom part of the seat back in - it doesn't do anything and is just "there" when you have to remove the seat again next time. It doesn't effect sitting in it b/c it still "clips" in on the front of the seat bottom.
Hope that helps, if ya need more specified instructions, IM me, it's pretty self explanatory once you fold the seat down and look at the corners.
EDIT:
The really sad part is that the fuel filter mounted on the firewall is harder to change than that fuel pump . Just don't drop anything in the gas tank, might wanna clean around the edges of the filter "pod" with a whisp broom b4 popping it up.
Make sure you buy the gasket too or you can throw an evap purge light.
It's part #1
Gasket is #9, but it looks like it comes with it.
Hope that helps .

Re: Mechanic says I need a new fuel pump? (HondaPartsHero)
ok quick question, ihave the assembly out and in view. How exactly do I undo the fuel pump? I can't seem the location on the clip to press down to get it out. I also imagine I have to unclip the fuel hose - does it just slide out of the bottom of the assembly or do I have to do something there as well?
