Making a 99 Civic faster on the low end
Ok since everyone read half my previous post and completely missed my point, let me try this again.
I've seen civics be very fast. So I know there's a capability there to really make them quick
I'm looking for some relatively simple solutions to make my 99 civic ex coupe faster.
I mostly want it to take off faster than normal. It's an automatic so obviously I can't control that myself.
What would be a practical (cost wise) mod to make it take off a little quicker. Right now if I drive it hard, it takes quite a while to get up to about 50-60 mph.
I've got a few thousand to throw into it and I'd like to be able to reach these speeds a lot faster.
For the kind of power I'm talking about, i'd like it to be comparable to my old 98 Lexus GS300 (if you know the car this will be helpful)
Obviously that car was more powerful because it was 6cyl. BUt I'm kinda spoiled on it now and I'd like to see some kind of power increase from my civic

Towing it with a Tahoe would be the easiest solution.
The only way you're going to do what you'd like is to invest thousands of dollars into it.
The first step is getting a manual civic or converting your current one to manual.

don't really want to convert to manual. That's a lot of work.
Would I benefit from a supercharger in this case?
Also i'm not sure how viable it is but what about computer tunes as well?

Here's the thing, if you want to run forced induction reliably, you have to run a chipped and tuned ECU. Which requires you to run a manual trans. You really don't have much in the way of options for going fast in an automatic civic.

Same as before. Automatic=fail. There are no bolt ons that will make your car any faster unless you consider a turbo a bolt-on.

In reality how big of a mod is a manual conversion?
It seems like a lot of work to put a shifter through the chassis of a car

if u bolt a turbo or supercharger on that motor ur auto transmission will be toast not too much longer. i ran my turbo kit when my car was an automatic it only lasted a yr or 2 till it went on me. a 5 speed swap is actually not that hard to do nor is it really expensive. they're are many write ups on it and if u buy the parts and do it yourself u will only spend 500-600 bux for everything. which would be ur best solution if u wanna get off the line faster. i actually still have a modified stock torque converter that stalled at 2500-2800 off the line to launch. if u are looking into something like that let me know i still have it. if u wanna really look into doing a 5 speed swap look here https://honda-tech.com/forums/honda-civic-del-sol-1992-2000-1/%5Bfaq%5D-96-00-auto-manual-swap-full-detail-44pics-1337459/

Dont do any swaps from converting to a manual from an auto, sell your car, since you have a couple g's to spend and buy urself a manual civic, and then start your mod list. if your doing all motor, then you better have more money !

Re: Making a 99 Civic faster on the low end
The very first step is either:
1) Not driving a Honda
2) Getting rid of the automatic, and modifying your Honda with forced induction or a swap.
Give us a budget and get back to us.
There is no such thing as a cheap/fast car. Not if you want it to be reliable.
To be honest, I think you're in over your head. If you had the money to spend to do what you're asking about you wouldn't be here asking. That's usually the case 99% of the time.

Re: Making a 99 Civic faster on the low end
Really not that big of a deal. I've done it a couple of times on '92 - '95 Civics. '96 - '00 Is somewhat easier in that it doesn't require any cutting and welding or an aftermarket upper transmission mount.

I also recommend a manual transmission swap. One of the best modifications I did to my car was a final drive swap (from 4.4 to 4.785) which helped the bottom end tremendously.
Transmission(s) and their respective modifications are often one of the most overlooked ways to make some of the largest improvements to your car.

Re: Making a 99 Civic faster on the low end
my auto to manual swap only cost me $200 and two afternoons and i was driving it...
and i didnt use powertools or a engine lift... and that was two summers ago and i still drive it everyday to work
if your gonna keep your auto your gonna get anywhere. want more power maybe a civic isnt the car for you...

Re: Making a 99 Civic faster on the low end
OP sounds like one of those guys. I want my car to be faster, but not have to do any work. No, doesnt work like that. You have an automatic, small displacement, economy car. The only way to make decent power out of D series engines is turbo. And D series auto transmissions dont like turbos. So you either have to swap to manual, then turbo, or do engine swap to B,K,H series. No way around it. If you look for deals and are patient, you can find good prices on manual trans. and parts.

He doesn't necessarily want to turbo. He just wants to be able to impress people with a little demonstration of his Civic's power on the street. And do it without having to do a lot to it.
Here's how he originally phrased it.

I did my auto to manual conversion for $14 Just the cost for the Syncromesh. The rest a friend gave me from his parts car.
