Default Main Relay or distributor? Help, new civic owner.

I bought me a 91 DX hatchback for the low price of 350 bucks. Truthfully, its a steal because of the condition. But the problem it has is not turning on when its warmed up. Ive read about it, done much research and it could be either the main relay or the distributor i guess. I did a test i was told woould help distinguish the problem so i put starter fluid in the throttle body and the car turns on, and when it doesnt it does real fast then shuts off....i need help, should i just take it to a mechanic?

Replace the main relay - it is the most likely culprit, based on the information you've given. Common problem, inexpensive to fix. You could even fix it yourself if you have a soldering iron.

the guys over at midas continue to tell me over the phone that based on the problem ive described to them its 99 percent chance its the distributor. They say they cant test the car unless the problem persists for them to check it out. My luck, it will start everytime i turn it on for them.

Like Targa250R said, it's most likely the main relay. I have a '92 hatch and had the same problem. It wouldn't start when warm, changed the relay, it starts everytime no problem now.

main relay... when they warm up, the soldier joints inside seperate and wont allow the car to start... its more of a common problem in the summer time.
