Default ls vtec problem please help

i just built an ls vtec and have a problem . At first it was a little off time and wouldn't crank over so i retimed it and it finally started and it ran like **** it would idle really rough and has no response when i hit the throttle. i only have two cel lights and they are water cooling sensor and intake temp sensor but i dont think that those would cause to not be able to run. if you have any ideas on what it could be i would really appreciate it if you would let me know what to check

when the engine was untimed you cranked the engine right?
so check your valves and pistons they may bended due to cranking untimed engine...
