Default ls/vtec, or burn your money?

why do people convert to ls/vtec or any SIMILAR set up? all i hear is stories of how they blow up in less than a year.

as far as i can tell it is a waste of money.

please change my mind, give me some good stories.

(can't post anymore as of friday)
never heard of a failed ls/vtec?????

Never heard any of those stories. I have heard in general people blow Honda engines, not specifically the B18B with vtec head.

as far as my knowdledge it only fails through drivers mistakes. i've built both ls and b20 vtec and nothing wrong. i've done a search and usually the problems are floating valves caused by misshifts, and negligence in building motors such as boosting or compression too high with weak valves etc just some problems that i can throw in as of now but i personally dont know ne one thats f'ed up their ls or b20 vtecs if you do a search youll see its common by mis shifts but i think compression is key when building ls or b20 vtec when compression is high theres more you need to look into as far as care.

dont flame or correct grammar typed it up real quick. no time for h-t a-holes

I have had my stock head/stock block LS/VTEC setup on my 99 Si for about four months now. I've run a best of 11.61 @ 120.9. So far there has been no problems with the motor as far as reliability concerns. For a relatively low budget this setup really puts out over & over again. For the full setup click here: http://www.gtrmotorsports.net/bios/jaybio.html

The main reason for putting on an LS block was that I was looking for more torque that the B16A couldn't put down. Also the lower compression

****, i wish just to run like 14's and 13's. you've done some nice work on that engine. i was thinking of a swap like that, but money is hindering that. good luck in your future process.

to who ever had their b20 vtec "pro. built".. obviously not.. just cause a shop does it doesn't mean it's professionaly done. I'd consider it pro-done if the person building my motor was a known professional of BUILDING NON-TEC MOTORS/VTEC MOTORS/ETC.. you'd never go to a mopar specific shop [still pros right?] and build a b20vtec and expect it to last..

Or as bad as the driver... the most solidly built motor in the world can be destroyed in a matter of hours in the right (wrong) hands...

Thats true too. Some people just suck at keeping a motor reliable.

I had a ls-vtec on my old 88' dx civic and it was a good strong motor and believe it or not it was just a stock block ls with a b16 head slapped on it. I know that most people on HT dont think that is a wise decision but if in the hands of a responsible owner the motor can me reliable.
