Default ls 5th gear in b16 hydro or cable?

i have a 00 si b16 tranny and would like to put an ls 5th gear in it. however, the question popped in my mind, can i use either gears from the ls trannies, 90-93, and 94-01. since mine is hydro, do i have to use the gears from hydro trannies only or cable trannies as well. im a commuter and travel all the time and i figure using a ls fifth gear would help mostly on gas. thanks for viewing and please give some inputs. thanks

Anyone know where I can find the write up on doing this. I could've sworn I saw one on here before.

Its easy - when you open the tranny, 5th gear is right at the top of both shafts. You do have to remove both shafts, to do this.
A good (Helms) manual is highly recommended

Open the case and pull both shafts and forks (as a full assembly)
Pull housing bearing from input shaft
Pull 5th gear, replace with ls.
Replace bearing
You do not need a bearing separator for the input shaft.

Unstake counter shaft nut, remove.
Use a bearing separator to remove upper bearing.
Pull countershaft 5th, replace with ls.
Press bearing back on, replace nut, stake it.

Replace both shafts and forks together, as a whole assembly, as you did when you removed them.

After I did mine, Id say the heardest part, of the whole 5th gear swap, is getting the tranny housings back together....
All youre doing is replacing 2 gears. If you take it apart in steps, it all goes back together in exact reverse.

THIS is the separator I used.
You'll need a bearing puller too, along with some kind of thick shim (the same size as the bearing) to use in conjunction with the puller - I used a stack of 5 washers, jb weld'd together (worked awesome)

Yeah, it would be nice to know a little more about some of the technical information about a gear swap like this. I'm going to be driving back and forth to VT this fall and cruising at 4000+rpms @ 70mph doesnt appeal to me.

What type of effect would it have on the overall performance of the B16 transmission?
Would it effect the FD?

thanks
