Default lowering v-tec range?

Does anybody here mess around with the v-tec range, trying to lower the start of it? Is that bad for the engine? People use chips for it? Anybody know anything about it or do it?

its really not going to gain you anything if you lower vtec. You will most likely lose power. Say your vtec kicks in at 5700 and you lower it too 5500, thats not bad, but if you lower it to 5000 you will lose alot of power. It was made to kick in at a certain spot, so your best bet is it to leave it alone.

Yes you can chip your ecu, and that will help you alot. If you cheap ECU you can get a later redline, or even eliminate your redline.

IMO lowering your vtec too much makes the car sluggish when it comes into vtec. This is partly in due to the factor that VTEC works off oil pressure, inorder for a big change over you have to have high pressure which is achieved with high RPMS, I have a apexi vafc for my gsr motor and I have vtec set at 5000 right now but usually its set at 5200-5500...and it seems the higher I set it, the harder it kicks but It's safe to say that it hits perfectly fine at 5000

I have my vtec set to 4000 and will lower to 3800 after I retune.

Lowering the vtec range also affects your takeoffs dramatically(if youre drag racing). If the vtec is lowered you will most likely hit vtec before you have full traction resulting in too much wheelspin.

OP, I'm guessing you don't understand the point of vtec. Different cam profiles make power at different rpm ranges. vtec allows your motor to run off a cam with a lower powerband most of the time, so your idle and day to day driving isn't shitty. When vtec crosses over you switch to a cam profile that is better for higher rpms only. If you try to run off the vtec cam profile at too low of an rpm, its counter-productive. The only time I would recommend messing with the crossover point is if your motor is no longer stock, and your car is dyno tuned (like litterbox).

Ah, I see, so it's probably the best to leave it stock I see, but what kinda chip can you put in there? I know it's stock which I think is a P28 ('95 civic EX D16Z6). What kinda chips can you add?

When I go on e-bay (I can't afford super skunk2 30k ECU's but all I can find on ebay is those gay ones that like, plug into ur ecu and take off ur speed governor and "remap the gas/fuel ratio map" "10 - 15+ hp GUARANTEED!" Then they have a bunch of gay testimonials there whihc were probably falsified...

In any event, I'm not trying to get up with something where I can't f-uck up my engine (bend the valves, mis timing, etc.) but I'm looking for something for a little more punch than the stock P28 with

Anybody have any suggestions on what I should do?

PS: If it has to do with fuel ratio re-mapping, I'm using LS 550 injectors

EDIT:
How do you "eliminate the red line" - if you mean eliminate the rev limiter, I see, but you can't "get rid of the red line"....I mean it's impossible, eventually the engine will get to a point where it floats and throws a rod or pops a piston

Trust me the p28 is a very good chip to use. Someone who actually knows what the expletive they are doing can "re-chip" it and fine tune the air/fuel maps at specific rpms increasing power.

As for ******* around with the vtec crossover...I'd leave that to a proffesional tuner. You can seriously damage your cam lobes and ultimately the whole motor.

I have an apexi vafc and am very tempted to mess with it but I am still figuring the ******* thing out after 1 year of install.

P28 is the perfect ecu to chip, you can change the rev limiter with a chip. you should go get dyno tuned with those injectors though, a generic internet bought chip won't really help.

moates.net...make sure you got to the honda section and buy the REBURNABLE CHIP, its like 15 bucks...and get ahold of a p28, which if you are lucky can get for like 60-100 bucks!
