Alright i searched lower ball joint in recent and archived topics but all of them are about ''how do i seperate the lower ball joint,etc''

All right when i try to put the castle nut on the lower ball joint the bolt i'm trying to put the nut on just spins and spins..

I went and bought a lower ball joint from napa today for 26.00 today.

I looked into my haynes manual and it says you need a shop press and specific toold,etc.

Has anyone done a writeup or can help me with what tools i need,etc

Do i haft to rent a ball joint press from autozone or is there other ways,etc

go to auto zone and rent a ball joint seperator for under 20 bucks. They'll show you how to use it. Everything just elementary from there.

I'm trying to replace my lower ball joint not seperate it.

It's already seperated.

You'll need to have the old one pressed out and have the new one pressed in.

take off the snap ring, use a shop press to press out the old, then press in the new, reinstall snap ring.

the new one really does need to be pressed in (Ive done it 1x w/ a hammer...but I wouldnt do it agian)
The old one, however, can be smacked out w/ a hammer very easily.

You need a strong heavy hammer for that. I personally just gave up on the hammer. I took off the entire knuckle and off to the machine shop I went. They pressed it out and put the new one in. $25. They made it look so simple.

actually, Ive used a regular house hammer twice and a 4lb sledge twice
Its really not that hard to remove them...just whack at it

Your best bet is to go to a shop and have it pressed. I doubt you will be able to beat it back in...just pay the money to do it right. A shop in orlando cost me 40$ to press it out and press the new one in. Might be less for you just to get it pressed in. It only takes like 1 min with a press....you try and do it yourself....it will take a lot longer....get it done right

You can do it yourself with 2 hammers. A fat, sledge-type hammer to hit the old one out, and a regular hammer to hit the new one in.

I've done this to mroe than 5 cars now including my own two cars. So I don't want to hear anything about this not working.

There's always the "right" way, then there's the easy way.

This way is free, works, and saves time from going to shop.

That's not bad; I'm just giving cheap/poor/nocar folks an alternative.

yep not bad at all i took mines to a shop they wanted 60 each.
next day i found out napa only charge 15 so i went back took them from the shop and took it to napa. saved myself a **** load of money

at Honda we have a special tool....to use an impact gun to drive the old one out and the new one in. Takes a max 5 minutes to do both. DO NOT FORGET THE SNAP RING ....or you'll wonder why it's not coming out

Alright..

So you can install the new lower ball joint by your self just be really careful?

I seen in a previous post in another thread to use a deep well socket to hit it back in..

Anyone got any tips getting it back DIY?

It's been a really long week (pulling my tranny off, getting it rebuilt, putting my tranny back in and then my ball joint strips)

I'm ready for this damn car to start up.

Lube it nice and good, insert slowly, tap lightly

wait, you';re saying it just spins??? Is the boot torn or is there massive play in the joint????

If it just spins, thats not a sign to replace it. It happens all the time, ESPECIALLY if the threads are not perfect. What I would do first is thourougly (sp) clean the nut and the LBJ threads. Spray some good lube on there and start threading the nut on. Now here's the trick.....take a long jack handle, pry bar, etc, and then apply pressure downwardonto the upper side of the LBJ, under the axle, using suspension components for leverage. This should be enough force to hold the LBJ tight, and for you to tighten the nut up

Because what happens, if the threads aren't perfectly clean, they will catch on each other, and you end up exerting that force on spinning the joint around

Yeah i started to put the ball joints back together and i put the castle nut on there and the damn bolt just spins as i'm trying to tighten the castle nut.

I'll try what you said but my LBJ isn't looking to good anyway i may just go ahead and replace it. I just want my car running/driving TONIGHT.



What are the downside effects of driving with some fucked up ball joints?

its exactually what emerika has stated...ur lower ball joint probably isnt bad at all...do the leverage trick and it'll work...make sure you have alot of pressure on top of that lca arm and pry bar...effects...vibration in the steering wheel...car feels unstable...you could tell if ur lower ball joints bad by moving ur wheel up and down while it's on the car...there shouldnt be any play at all (meaning it should be nice and tight)

Have one of those kits at work. Works pretty slick. Although it makes it alot easier to use if you have an impact gun.

Well ****...no wonder I couldnt get the stupid thing to work well enough when I tried it.
