Low power, rough Idle

Low power, rough Idle
Greetings to all,
I've got a 2000 Civic EX, not sure of the engine size due to no engine displacement sticker under hood. It is a 4 cyc. Its got just over 120K miles on it. One day, it just started to run rough. Checked for loose gas cap, vacuum leaks, and made sure the coolant was topped off. All okay. It did have a "check engine" light on. I reset that by pulling the fuse for 10 sec. WA LA...it was better...for about 2/3 of a mile then the rough running came back, but with the engine light flashing. Put it in the garage to further investigate problem. I noticed that when it was running in gear at idle, it was pretty smooth. I would then "power brake" it, it would be smooth acceleration up to 1500 rpm then act like one cylinder would drop out and continue to act that way if I tried to accelerate past that point. When I started to ease up on the throttle the "miss'' would go away, but come back when i gassed it again. My next step is to pull the plugs to see if a plug is fowling. Anybody got any other ideas? Sure could use a car that gets good mpg during these high fuel price times.
Thanks to all.

Re: Low power, rough Idle
your car is running in "limp" mode which is a safe default mode that the car runs when it's having issues. If you can get the check engine light fixed then the car should run properly as it should. With that said it wouldn't hurt if you can get those codes and post them here. There are five stickes in the top of this forum and one of them will show how you can obtain which ones are being set. Also it couldn't hurt to give it a full tune up with plugs, wires, cap, and rotor.
if you have the original engine it is a d16y8 that has vtec. If the timing belt has never been changed now would be a good time to do so along with a water pump and timing belt tensioner. In the owner's manual it lists the service interval at 90k severe -105k normal miles, or 10 years.
If you get codes 71-74 then it is a misfire condition for cylinders 1,2,3,4 depending on which one(s) it actually is. Those generally mean you just need a full tune up.
