Default Lots of Play In All Gears, What is the problem

aight my friend is a doing a LS/Vtec swap in an EG. He has a type R tranny and is using a stock B series shift linkage, BUT when you put the car in any gear (1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, and reverse) it has as much play as it would in neutral. I don't think it is the shift linkage myself. It has to be something in the tranny right? Looking for someones input or someone who has had the same problem and knows what is wrong. Thanks for all the input.

I'm no expert with that sort of thing, but my guess would be the linkages, to be honest. This usually happens when it's been abused lol. Most civics driven by morons are like that. Previous owner perhaps?

Hopefully someone with a bit more knowledge in this area can help you out.

Good luck

sounds like bad bushings...its an easy fix. you can buy a urethane linkage bushing set for $10

that won't do it, those bushings are for the stabilizer part. Get a new linkage, its the bushing right underneath the actual shifting level that are shot, my bro's 92 Si had the same thing. Replaced that and its better now.

do you have a roll pin holding the linkage or a bolt...if you have a bolt thats where you slop is coming from put the correct pin in there and it will fix your problem

he is referring to part #30 in the pic below:

If this is not the cause, then check the bushings, part #'s 5, 15, and 19 above.

5 is the one I would think would most likely be the cause, because it is on the shifter lever itself, but check the others while you are at it.

I got that picture from the following site, but this is off of a EG Del Sol, so I am not 100% sure that the parts will be the same (The Sol B-Series linkage is slightly longer, and there may be differences in the bushings too), but just call up the local honda/acura dealer to find out for sure.

Yep, or commonly known at "Bitch Pin". Had the same problem and ended up being a bolt in there instead of the pin. Check there first

I would check the bitch pin if you're having a ton of slop in all gears. Check the 3 bushings as well, just to see their condition. Could be those as well, but I'm not sure they'd wear out that evenly to make it that sloppy in all gears.

I just had this problem on my 00 dx hatch, it was the joint between the shifter (#2) and the rod (#13). It got worse and worse over time, before i fixed it, it was wobbling a good 4" freely lol, in all gears.

Honda does have a kit which comes with all the parts you need to replace that joint... #'s 27,24,4,5,26,12 (above pic), it's like 25 bux or so.
It's kind of overkill, because it could be just a destroyed bushing (#5), or as mentioned, bitch pin, or the bushing holding that whole upper rod assembly steady (#19).

While you have the car jacked up, or on ramps, have someone wiggle the shifter around... you should be able to tell right away what joint(s) aren't tight and need to be replaced.

This is for d-series, but B is similar.
