Loose shifter hitting exhaust.
On my 98 civic coupe I have a short shifter. When I installed the ss I installed the energy suspension bushings that go to the shift linkage. It wasn't hitting the exhaust until about after 3 months and is getting way worse. I have play in the shifter but it's up and down. Not side to side. Anyone have any idea on a way to fix this. I can't find a part number for the bushings or cup or whatever it is that the shifter pivots on. Im assuming that's the worn out portion. Any help greatly appreciated.

Re: Loose shifter hitting exhaust.
I have the same issue on my 98 civic ex, its got a b16a the shift linkage rattles off the edge of the upper heat sheild on the chasie of the car.
Fixed it for awhile by taking a grinder and making a small notch in the shift linkage, now the shift linkage has a little more play so it's making contact again, so im going to cut a peice of the heat sheild off where its hitting and call it a day.
You may have a different issue but I thought it was my bushing and **** which im sure they need to be replaced soon but usally it hit's off the heat sheild
also i got a aftermarket cat, maybe its hitting off the oem cat, just get two people someone get under there and have someone rev the car a little and see where contact is being made

Sounds to me like the bolts holding the shifter up are coming loose. How's your front and rear engine mounts doing? Does it only rattle when you are driving?

Re: Loose shifter hitting exhaust.
The heat shield was removed when the ss was installed because it was hitting so bad I couldn't move the shifter so that's not the issue. It hits/rattles all the time. Usually idling. I'm going to have to check out those bolts. That may be it but don't think so. I think it's the bushing because when I removed the center console I removed the seal for the shifter and I can see the play is at the ball of the shifter. I can see it when I lift the shifter up and Down. I just dont know where I can get that bushing.
