Looking for SRR D series FD impressions
Anyone have any experience with these d-series final drives?
interested mainly in the following areas:
-RPMs on HWY use
-Reliability or problems
-0 to 60 times
Any other impressions would be appreciated too!
Thanks

Re: Looking for SRR D series FD impressions (whoobeedoobee)
Which are you interested in, the 4.7 or 4.9? I plan to get a 4.9 soon for my D build up. I used a ATS 4.9 in my ITR and loved it. Best mod I ever did! Acceleration is great but top-end will suffer. I currently have 15" wheels with a 205/50 series tire which is why I want to the 4.9. Your engine better be health as it will spin around 3000 rpms @ 60 mph, 3500 @ 70 mph, and 4000 @ 80 mph (with my tire set-up). Expect about a 3-4 mph drop at each of those rpms with a 4.7. If you commute a lot that is something to think about along with the drop in mpg.

Thanks Chris
I don't think I ever rode in your ITR with that FD. Is it the same one Cam has?
I am not sure which one I want to try yet, but am definitely interested in it. Kind of just wanted to know if it is worth it or not. I am thinking a lot about auto-x lately, but who knows. I have $ in my pocket and all kinds of ideas for the VX. The sad thing is very little time right now.

Yes, Cameron has my old final drive/fw in his current car. His ITR is my old roommate's and my old roommate bought mine.
I should have mine before Xmas but won't be installing it until the engine build is done. Have a new Kaaz LSD or it too.

I'm definitely looking at the 4.9, and as soon as I can afford it, its going in my car. I have the DX transmission now as-is, so I need all the boost in acceleration I can get

mmmm aftermarket final drives...
the ATS 4.9 is hands down the BEST non-suspension mod I have done to my car.
my ITR tranny with 4.9, cruising at 80mph is almost 5000 rpm.
surely the SRR is similar, so I vote for the sickest possible in a D series, is it 4.9 thats available?
that would make up for a lot of low end grunt that the D series are missing... the change in FD is amazing in how it transforms the motors feel at low rpm.

with my stock 4.250 FD and CRX 5th, I cruise at 3700 rpms and 75 mph.
The Z6 LOVES IT!!!!!!! Still gets 38-40 mpg.
Go beyond 3600 rpm, and mileage falls to the 34-35 mpg range.

Noticed that you said that you have a VX. What engine do you have in it? I would recommend that you get a z6 or y8 tranny before you start looking at a FD. Those trannies will do wonders as their gearing is much better than the stock vx gearing and you don't have the issues that you would encounter with a FD.

anybody know how hard installing a final drive would be? I am interested in one for my y8 tranny, but i guess it involves opening up the tranny and stuff right? How long would it take?

Little bit more difficult, you have to unbolt the tranny from the motor, drop it, open the tranny casing, remove the mainshaft and countershaft assemblies, then disassemble the mainshaft (take all of the gears and bearings off the mainshaft) and reassemble it onto the mainshaft provided by SRR. I dont expect to spend more than a weekend on doing the whole thing...i'm doing my clutch at the same time I do the final drive though...two birds with one stone
I've disassembled my transmission already to replace an input shaft bearing, so I'm pretty familiar with my transmission. However, if you havent messed with a transmission before...i'd say go with a Z6/Y8 transmission...
BTW
EX/Si Transmission Ratios:
1st-----3.250
2nd-----1.900
3rd-----1.250
4th-----0.909
5th-----0.750 for Si HB and Del sol Si
or------0.702 for 2 dr or 4 dr sedan
Final Drive---4.250
DX Transmission Ratios:
1st-----3.250
2nd-----1.762
3rd-----1.172
4th-----0.909
5th-----0.702
Final Drive---4.058
Only the 2nd and 3rd gears are slightly longer in the DX transmission, and the final drive is better too. I have to believe that having a 4.9 final drive in a DX transmission would be far superior to a stock EX tranny.

We sold quite a good number of SRR D series FD this past year and Im sure some are on HT. I know a couple of the guys are on the D series board and they all had good points about the FD.

should read "disassemble the countershaft",
then you have to swap the ring gear on the diff (easy 10 bolts, LH threads!)
