Default Lookin to go to the dark side . . .

i have a d16y7 with 90,000 miles on it, and was wondering what preparations would be necessary to run an fmax kit at 8 psi. im thinkin rods, dont need pistons cuz the compression is already quite low, dont know what else. thanx in advance!

If you're going to do rods it would be kinda silly to not do pistons too. It would hurt to put those internals in, and a block guard if you wanna do it the inexpenive way. Nothing can beat sleeving, but it depends how much you wanna spend.

well, what benefits would i get from getting forged pistons?

Stronger, and they allow you to choose your compression ratio. Do you could drop compression to raise boost. As long as you have the fuel system necessary to run the higher levels of boost. For another 450 bucks while you already have the block ripped down, I would do it.

use the money from building the motor for a ls swap and boost it

Screw the ls and boost that y7, thats what I'm doing. Same as someone else said if your planning on rods why not pistons since the bottom end will be taken apart anyway?

im thinkin:
-fmax kit
-si/ex tranny(unless the longer gears would be better for boost)
-block guard
-forged pistons(wiseco, je, etc not sure)
-rods

You should talk to Mike from Motormatrix.com, he has some awesome prices, and is very good about answering questions.

Why not just part out your turbo kit? If you look around you can find shiat way cheaper. Id go forged pistons, you have to remember the stock pistons are cast iron (I beleive). And the forged 4340 (i think thats one type of the metals) can take way more abuse. You dont HAVE to do rods but if you have the money, why not? And id stay with the ls tranny, for the longer gears it lets you stay in boost longer, as long as you want a daily driver the ls tranny will be fine. If you want a race car, then gsr or si tranny.

My 2 pinch a pennies.

Nevermind, your sohc.

Go for it man. Don't listen to everyboyd who tells you to drop compression to run more boost. What a stupid idea (IMHO) . Keep the higher compression, run lower boost. That way your car will be faster off of boost, and just as fast in boost and you wont have to run your turbo as hard. Tuning may be tough on high compression motors, but when you have to run less boost to keep up it's not that big a deal.

Don't get me wrong. I wasn't telling him to drop compression to run higher boost. Maybe that's not the kid of setup that he is going for. He asked me what the benefits are of a forged piston. I answered with stronger material, and the ability to change your compression ratio to name a couple...

Cool cool...I didnt really take it that way, I just hate seeing everyboyd tell people looknig for opinons to drop compression and go higher boost...kinda destroys your driveability to me...no power off boost, then a big damn jolt of power

put in B16A rods with toyota supra turbo pistons mated to them. best, cheapest setup for a 75mm D-series turbo engine
in case you don't know what the hell I'm talkin about:

ricey- if you've ever had a turbo setup, then you should know how much better low compression and high boost is than higher compression and lower boost. low boost isn't worth the price of the turbo kit. just my .02 though...

Yes sir...Im boosted right now thank you. I do understand that low boost on higher compression is pricey, but is more driveable (in a dialy driven car) and worth the extra money to me.

why do people always say drop your compression. if u can tune then u should run the same as stock. not 8:8:1 or 9:0:1 i boosted a b16a with 10:1:1 with no problems. don;t drop your comp. keep it stock but with the forged pistons and rods u can boost close to 18psi daily. depending on if u can get it profesionaly tuned, and what condision your sleeves are in. u can even run 10psi on the stock block. just need good fuel managment.
