Legal Odometer rollback?
I have a Civic hatch cx (no tach). I want to buy an instrument cluster (used) from a SI for the tach (I hate the big universal tachs). My question is: If I go to a dealer (most likely Honda), could they legally set the odometer to my original miles?
Thanks

why not just do it yourself? I don't think you would get much hassle about rolling it back if it's still a stock cluster and functions fine.
and I don't think honda would roll-back your odometer at all...

no, the clusters don't get matched to the cars - no VIN's
Honda won't do it for you.
Do it yourself, there is no "legal" way of doing it - though it's not illegal per-se to swap out the cluster... I would roll the #'s to match, that's about all you can do, asside from that if u have 150k and u buy a cluster with 100k and say the car's got 100k on it when you go to sell it, that's just misrepresentation...but if it's the stock cluster there's no way to tell if it's the original or not..but ur going Si so pple could tell...
Basically, there's no "papers" to do it legally

there are no VINs in the cluster.
you can do what ever you want to the cluster, as long as you tell who ever you are selling it to that it's not the original mileage on the cluster.
If you want the original mileage on the cluster simply set it yourself and take a picture of the old cluster and the new one in the car with the same odo readings on both, as proof.
this is all depending on your states laws of course.

That's what I was thinking. My car only has 110,000, most clusters have more than mine. So I should buy a cluster with close miles and get to rolling?

If you change your cluster and the miles are less then your current miles the next time you get your papers renewed at the DMV the difference will show on your carfax report. It my not be a big deal to you the owner but someday you may want to sell the car and then it could be a big deal to the new buyer.

Re: (fizix_skate)
im pretty sure, in CA at least, that if your car is over 10 years or has over 200,000 k miles the odometer doesn't have to be accurate. my friends plymouth horizon doesn't even go into the 6 digits, so its really not that big a deal if you ask me. if you do it yourself theres no way anyone will be able to know, therefore nothing illegal ever happened, because Nothing Happened At All... Right?!

Only if I go to a mechanic or somewhere they send updates to Carfax-like companies. So... it won't.

If you gonna do the swap, and want to be an honest person when you are ready to sell the car, why dont you just keep teh original odo and show/include the part when you sell it, so no matter what you set it to (the new one) you can tell them this is the part you took out and you set the new one to this same odo and started driving from there.

This is kinda out of topic... but if you change different sized rims u can screw the odometer up... coz it measures the revolutions of the wheels.. and larger or smaller rims will of set the measurements... so i have been told

I know my local honda dealership will send guage clusters off to have mileage corrected to whatever you want. I think it costs like 75.00 plus a few weeks to send it off and get it back.

Wrong, odometer turns based off of speedometer feedback. Got a long trip coming up? unplug vss! Just kidding, with no vss, you'll be limited to 50mph not to mention that it's just a bad idea all together.
I'm gonna take my cluster apart next month and roll it FORWARD to 777,771 And take a picture of 777,777 BECAUSE THAT MEANS I WIN A PRIZE! The ecu reads this and on non vtec cars, it gives you a easter egg of 1 mile of enhanced vtec ownage?

Yes, they will exempt mileage on the title so you dont have to worry about it. I have an Si tach that shows 80K and my car fax with the most recent mileage check that was done before the swap was somewhere around 200K. And my engine has about 40K, so everything is jacked up.

If you read carefully you'll see that I never said there were any VIN #'s on the clusters. YOu can't because there's no way of anybody knowing that you're telling the official mileage? Say you own a car for 20k since the last "incident" where the mileage was reported...well taht's 20k you don't have to report that you've driven the car.
So maybe it's a buyer beware thing or maybe it's part of the NYS lemon laws, either way it's fucked up.
I'd go with this kinda deal:

legit, legal, and done right. PLUS you'll have the paperwork - and nothing really beats the paperwork.

Re: Legal Odometer rollback?
Setting aside the legality concerns (I live in Florida and since my car is 20 years old, the title reads odometer reading exempt), is there a faster way to roll the mileage without manually turning the smallest gear? I need to roll my new JDM cluster about 100k miles FORWARD to match my chassis mileage but the only way I can figure out is by turning the smallest gear which increases a tenth of a mile at a time just as if you are driving.. This will take me forever, but I don't want to try taking off the needle or anything and getting the gears out because that will break the gauge.
