Knocking noise on my y8 :(
well kinda got carried away on Christmas eve day and went cruising with my friends. Hitting the freeway I hit redline in third gear, got off the freeway and noticed a knocking noise coming from my engine bay. Took a quick look at it and didn't see anything visibly wrong... I'm guessing it might be my internals, i hope i didnt warp my cylinders...
any guesses on what might be wrong?
Other Details:
At idle i can hear the knocking noise...from 1k-3k i cant but when i go higher than that the noise becomes louder...

if you can find something like a big breaker bar, huge/long screwdriver, etc, put it on different spots on the engine and place/cup your ear to the end. as you move it to different spots, you should be able to discern where the sound is coming from since the sound will be more pronounced as you get near it with the probe end of the tool.
regarding the pumps in the d16y engines, here is a post i made on another forum-

for what it's worth...
i ran a y7 from when i got my old '97 hatch in '98, to somewhere around 01-02. it was built in '99 when it had about 30k on it, with custom 12.5:1 pistons, some sort of resized rod combination and a nitrous setup. i can't remember how many miles i put on it but it was alot because i was going to school and delivering pizza...and just driving everywhere all the time. i never had any issues except with the wrist pin bosses of the pistons, from detonation because it was tuned using some bandaids (MSD retard box for the nitrous, original afc on a chipped, yes, chipped p2e ecu!). The bottom end never had any oiling issues. i'd guess it had ~140k on it when i gave up on it, give or take, with 110k or so of that being built. hard to say because i had the VSS unplugged for a long time because of a harness issue.
then in '02ish, i built a y8. THAT bottom end i ran from '02 to '07, something like 70k @ about 13:1 and ~7500 rpm; the engine had no issues except, again, tuning issues and cracked ring lands a few times on the p29 pistons. the last set of pistons i got tuned with an apexi power fc and it ran perfectly until i parted it out in '07 because i bought a jdm b18c swap.
both times the oil pumps were untouched. if you look at the life of the car, it had 180k on the odo, and there was a LONG stretch during the y7 period where i had the VSS unplugged, so honestly...i had stock y7/y8 oil pumps with stock honda rods and bearings for probably ~220k, and probably 180k of that total mileage was built.
if i was to do it all over again, i'd probably mod the stock oil pump just because it can't hurt. wouldn't shy from an obd2 bottom end though.

How hard was it to fix the problem?
I dont want to try to do it myself and then end up making it worse...
Can you give a quick summary on how you fixed ur car?
Thank for the help

Re: Knocking noise on my y8 :(
first you need to put the car on jack stands
then drain the oil
take out the oil pan.. you might need to unbolt the exhaust manifold to get to the other bolts
take out the oil pick up
unbolt the main cradle youre gonna need to hit it with a rubber hammer after you take out all the bolt beacuse the dowel that holds it in... should drop right out
then unbolt the connecting rod cap.. make sure that you have a 17mm socket for your crank youre gonna have to turn it so you can get to the other cylinders
after you unbolt the cap youre gonna have to push the piston upto get to the upper bearing.. sometimes the bearing might be stuck to the crank or it will just fall out or worse it will be in pieces...
check for scarring on the rod cap and the crank if its minimal go ahead and sand it down ith some really fine grit sand paper..... clean after sanding
put in new bearings make sure assemble everything with assembly lube...
put rod cap back on torque to specs.. i believe its 25 ft lbs
to the same on the rest
then put main cradle back on torque to specs.. i believe its 21 lbs on the first step and 38 lbs on the second step..
then assemble everything!!!
goog luck to you.. i also suggest you quit beating on your car

Re: Knocking noise on my y8 :(
also, to diagnose which rod is knocking start your car up, and with the hood open, pull one plug wire off at a time. when you find the cylinder thats knocking the noise will go away with the wire off.
also, try and not run it very long... it will only cause more damage.
id get a set of rod bearings. drop the pan, and just put some fresh bearings in it and youd be good.
good luck

You can kill a coil doing that, and honestly why bother, if its knocking its going to have to come apart anyway at which point it'll be pretty clear which cylinder it is.

Re: Knocking noise on my y8 :(
heres the list of parts that i bought
rod bearings $ 32
rtv black silicone.. for your oil pan $7
4 quarts of oil and s2000 oil filter $15
assembly lube $7
all in all you can save this motor if you do it right, but i dont suggest this type of work especially if you are not mechanically inclined to do the work

Re: Knocking noise on my y8 :(
anyway, to continue about your post, if you can isolate it to one rod, that certainly would be ideal, since it's much better to take down one rod, vs. unnecessarily undoing 4 rod caps. but honestly, if i were him, since it's already apart i'd probably check the condition of all of them, so i can see THAT point.

Re: Knocking noise on my y8 :(
anyway, yeah if i were you i'd look into getting in touch with a reputable performance honda/import shop in the area, as opposed to anyone else.
you live in the LA area i assume so that shouldn't be hard!
maybe call exospeed and see who Wil recommends- (661) 775-1963

Re: Knocking noise on my y8 :(
not sure if this is your problem or not, but try running a higher octane
fuel, premium even maybe, higher octane fuel is meant to reduce "engine knock"
so try that for a full tank or 2...
oh, and if it's just an annoying tick it's a honda lol.

Is it really that easy to change out the bearings on the rods? You guys make it sound like its cake. The closets ive gotten down there is dropping the pan when I had to change my oil pan gasket.

Re: Knocking noise on my y8 :(
Well I would just like to thank everyone from honda tech for helping me figure out what was wrong with my car :D
Well I took my car to Demon Workz Located in Garden Grove
(Props to Bernard for all the help) and they confermed what you guys thought the problem was.
It was a Rod bearing that was toast Due to running low on oil and driving on it for a day...
"My Bad" but he is getting it done as we speak and im gonna pick up my baby 2maro :D
Moral of the story: Stop Beating on my Baby! and always check that oil...
Had to learn the hard way like i said "another lesson learned"
But anyways Thanks To all for the help :D
