knocking on hard turn
what causes a knocking noise to come from your wheel well area on a hard turn? my car started doing this tonight coming home from work. may have been there for a while i guess, not sure. was driving home without the radio off and heard a pretty loud, distinct knock knock knock knock knock. kept knocking through the whole turn. is this a ball joint going bad?
thanks!

Re: knocking on hard turn (Econo Appliance)
cv boots look fine. i thought axles made more of a clattering sound? this is a hollow sounding knocking?
makes the sound ONLY when turning... to the left.

axles all look good. none of the boots are torn or even have any slack in em. axles still look nice and tight. i can't shake em or pull em in and out at all...
what does a bad ball joint sound like?

Re: (ARMED)
hmm... when ball joints go bad do they make any noise or do they just come apart/break?
thanks for all the quick resonses, really appreciate it.
just wondering if there's anything that will knock when turning other then axles.
appreciate it!

Yes ball joints make a knocking sound. Mine is doing it right now! I thought it was my axle too, but I had my dad turn the wheel back and forth until it made the noise, and it is definitely the upper ball joint in my case. It sounds pretty much how you describe your noise.

i had the same problem in the rear of my car. it was a wheel bearing gone bad.
if this is the front it could be, balljoints, axles, wheel bearing, anything suspension related pretty much.

Re: (92ehatch)
so how do you determine it's a bad ball joint? lift the car up and turn the wheel back and forth? it will only knock if i turn the wheel pretty far to the left. if i don't turn hard, it won't do it...

That's exactly what mine did. I sat there turning it for like five minutes before I finally got it to make the sound. If you put your hand near there while it makes the noise, you can feel it pop.
