if it's the stock knock sensor, then it could be either:

1) knock sensor is bad/broken
2) knock sensor came loose
3) short or open in either the engine bay wiring or to the ecu

Yea it's the factory sensor...you can sit at idle and rev it for an hour and it'll never come on then two or three minutes after you start driving it comes on...

that's because (and somebody correct me if i'm wrong) the knock sensor doesn't kick in unless

a) there's a load on the engine
b) the engine rpm is above 3K

try driving around under 3K and i bet you the CEL doesn't come on

it will come on. Same thing happened to my room mate- 98 B18C5 with T3/T4 turbo at 7 pounds. What happened to his is weird though, the plug actually broke apart from the wires and left the wires hanging. We would reset ECU, drive under 2800 and after a few minutes it would come back on. It's a pain to get to also

i kind of have the same problem, when i got my motor from jhp.com i took the jdm wire harness off and i acidentally broke the knock sensor. so i just left it out of the motor and unplugged when i put the motor back in. now when i drive it wont come on if i rev the motor at idle but as soon as im in gear and i hit about 4-5k it throws a cel?

then while im rolling ill turn the car off and back on and the cel is gona then as soon as i hit 4-5 k its back on?

im guessing its just because i dont have a sensor is why its throwing a cel?

i pulled coeds from my ecu but it dosnt have amny to give me so im guessing the ecu reads the knock sensor id unplugged and once there is a knock or somthing it says"no knock sensor plugged in lets throw a cel to warn the driver" is this even close to being right as far as my car goes?

do u think getting a knock sensor will fix this problem?
will not having a knock sensor harm anything?
the wireharness is brand new from place racing so i know for a fact its not the wire harness.

I've had the broken knock sensor too. It got broke while installing a JG/E Intake Mani. From what I understand, the knock sensor input is used by the ECU from 0-5000 rpm. After that, it is ignored by the ECU.
