Knock sensor
A friend and I have recently finished swapping a SOHC vtec motor into my car. its a 98 DX and the motor is out of a 99. a D16y8. Everything went great. Only check engine codes were for Vtec. We knew that was going to happen.
Anyway, i got it all wired up. everything done. No check engine codes until about a mile down the road and i use the jumper and it reads 23, Knock sensor.
If i beleive correctly arent all 96-00 civics wired for a knock sensor already? why am i throwing this code? any help is appreciated.

Only the y8 motors have the sensor. They are known to break (the plastic plug separates from the metal base). Make sure the sensor isn't broken. If it's broken/missing then it will take a few minutes of driving before you get a CEL. You're using a P2P ECU right?

Yea Im using the P2P. Where is the Sensor located?
It isnt much to wire it if i can Find the sensor. Thanks.

or at least until in starts to detonate for whatever reason and the computer doesn't know, so it just keeps right on advancing the timing till she blows up. Yeah... you don't need a knock sensor.

Well i just Put my car through inspection before the swap because of any issues. So ive got Two years.
Will Vtec still work with the check engine code on for the knock sensor?
I havent gotten it to 5200rpm yet.
Where is the Sensor located?
Why didnt i get the knock sensor code until i wired Vtec?

It's a simple 1 wire plug, from ecu to sensor, but you have to use shielded wire, and the shielding braid gets grounded at the ecu, there is a brown plug near the ecu wrapped with tape where all the grounds for the shielded wires go.

Ok, After Looking for the knock sensor a few times. And reading up on it, I realized it threads into the block, What do i see, just threads, no sensor.
Now i went on a search to find one.
I see $150 dollar ones. Holy ****.
Then $169...
And i also checked Ebay and found a few for around a 100 dollars.
Is there anywhere that sells them for cheaper? or am i just lookin to bite the bullet on this one.
I guess i could convert to OBD1 but with the conversion harness and ECU it would prolly be more expensive,
These things seem to be made out of gold.

its a pain in the *** to change the sensor as well...you can try it from under the car but it would be easyier to take your intake mani off... but make sure you drain your coolant first...i got my sensor for like 20 bucks for my y8...but then again i have a buddy that works at a junk yard...but make sure it doesnt come seperated which is why i had to replace mine in the first place

I Found a knock sensor, And it threaded right in. Now all im looking for is the Plug for the sensor so i can wire it to my ECU.

yes u need a knock sensor, when the ecu sees this code 23 it sends the engine into limp mode, your not getting the full performance and it also will blow your engine after a little while. i just did the same swap. what a lot of people dont tell you is that you will probably need a ex fuel tank with the fuel tank pressure sensor. the p2p runs a FTPS and the p2e does not. the tanks are the same but the ex has valves inside the tank. after a while you will probably get code 91.

goodluck finding that plug. i have a ls/vtec in my 92 hatch and i run a gsr ecu and it requires a knock sensor. what i did was take a common honda 2 wire plug and depin the one wire and used the plug with just one wire. it works. the KS has the same shape but it only needs one wire. use it. i am 100% positive this will work for u

a common 2 wire plug is the oil pressure plug on vtec or iacv plug or power steering plug or on 92-95 air temp sensor plug or purge vavle green vtec plug

alright, I took a few of the Oil pressure switch connectors from the Junk yard when i went to get some to wire Vtec, And you were right, the Pressure switch connector fits on the Knock Sensor, Thank you,
Now its a two wire connector, One being a ground. DO i have to get sheilded wire or can i just run the Hot wire to my ECU and ground the black one on my motor? Or do i HAVE to repin that plug and run sheilded wire to my ECU?
If so how do i PIN out that connector, I know how to at the ECU but not with the connector.

you do not need to sheild the wire. i ran it directly to the ecu pin. also the second wire on that plug u just depin. you do not ground it to the block. the sensor being screwed into the block grounds itself. do u know how to depin a wire? just make sure you dont epin the wire that the pin in the KS slides into. look at the back of the KS. u see how there is only one pin. u only need to use one of those wires. not two. who told u to run a wire for ground is way wrong. just depin the lower wire, run it to the ecu, plug it in the sensor and screw it in the block and BANG, all the vtec u want, at full performance. let me know how she runs
