Just purchased 1996 Del Sol DOHC VTEC
Hello everyone,
I just purchased a 1996 Del Sol DOHC VTEC with 82,000 miles and everything is bone stock. Because it is an EK and OBDII this seems like a big negative for mods.
What mods do you think would keep this car a cool daily driver. I dont care about money and I dont want a drag queen.
Its just so hard to find parts for this baby.
People who actually have experience with the 1996 or 1997 DOHC Del Sol, and maybe 1999 and 2000 Civie Si please chime in.
Thanks

Ahh well, it kinda depends on what You want to do. You could boost it, being a b16, it's a good starting platform. Since your a baller, a K swap would be cool K swap FTW! But honestly bro it's what makes you happy.

Re: Just purchased 1996 Del Sol DOHC VTEC
OOOPS. no swaps....sorry about that. Just plane and simple mods, prefer quality over cheap crap. I thought about about boost but I really dont want to ruin a nice ride.
Who has done Hondata on and OBDII B16?I know it not cheap, but thats ok. What gains did you get from it.
I was actually thinking about going for a basic and reliable NA setup, Password JDM intake, Good header(dont know which one yet), Tanabe Medalion Touring Exhaust(if it will fit), and Hondata Tuning on a dyno. I would love to get an extra 15WHP stay reliable with good fuel economy.
After that would be rims, shocks, springs, etc........
Please let me know if you have Hondata tuned on a NA B16 and how it helped or maybe even made no difference at all.
Thanks

An OBDI ECU swap is only good for a boost, if you aren't boosting, keep your comp system with what the car came with. Don't mess with electrical unless you have to.

well i guess i have to be the ******* and say first off its not a ek, i know what you meant but its still concidered the eg2, and second keep that thing barely built at all, dont do alot of crazy stuff to it motor wise, if anything just rebuild the valve train just not cams, the del sol besides na1's are the rarest to find built nicely done, just take care of it, and that obd2 crap isnt completely true, if you wanna tune it without having to worry with cel's then getta obd2 to obd1 jumper harness and run it on a p28 ecu and enjoy

He meant the motor was out of a EK.
I would just do your basic I/H/E
Best mods for a DD is suspension. Through a ES bushing kit on that beeeech

you guys are missing a very impotant part for the car that should prolly be replaced, the brake rotors and step up to biffier pads like hawks

Re: Just purchased 1996 Del Sol DOHC VTEC
Ok Lets see here, thanks for all the replys. I have been out of the Honda/Tuning game for a while. My last B16 was a new 00 Civic Si that I did not keep for very long.
So back to the point.
I did research all night searching through HT and other Forums like SuperHonda, etc...
Searching for info on Del Sol's with a DOHC 1.6 is hard to come by. The easiest search was just B16A in general.
So after hours and hours and staying up all night, I really think that I will just start with the suspension, light weight wheels, and brakes. I want to add some tastefull performance NA mods but just dont want to destroy the car.
As for the EG EK comment, yes I know Civic EG was 92-95 and EK was 96-00. On the Sol the engine as we all switched from obdI and b16a3 in 95 to obdII and b16a2 in 96, same as the 99-00 Si. The Del Sol is a strange car being stuck between two model years with minor updates. I missed my old slime green Del Sol and wanted to get a nice clean one and keep it that.
I will pick it up on Tuesday and keep you guys informed.
I am still itching for a good ECU tuning to improve everything across the board, throttle responce, mpg, and power.
Keep the info and thoughts coming.....
PEACE

seems you already know what you want .. id start with the after the susspention and brake upgrades start with bolt ons like header /hiflow cat, intake then if u want you can add cams. just research before you add something so i can get other reviews of whats good and what to exspect with the mods. we are not all gonna do the researching for you to each thier own opinion...

Re: Just purchased 1996 Del Sol DOHC VTEC
for the tuning since the motor is all stock but you wanna get the best performance out of that motor without going crazy, "I" would run a 4-2-1 header with a skunk2 mani and 68mm tb and yeah maby the high flow cat and 70mm cat-back from skunk2 or for the super clean way to go could be a full apexi ws2 cat-back, and as well "I" would save the money every last penny and do a 5-lug conversion and get some MUGEN RnR's, and lower the normal height 2'50 front and 2'25 in the rear with some small jdm touches

Re: Just purchased 1996 Del Sol DOHC VTEC
Unless you're going to bump your compression or install a hot cam, I wouldn't bother with a S2 intake manifold or a 68mm tb. Your engine as it is isn't dying for air, so throwing more air at it isn't going to do you much good. With higher compression or hotter cams, these would be good mods.
You could go with mild cams (like a Skunk2 Tuner Stage 1...so you don't have to upgrade your valve springs/retainers), a better header and exhaust, and piggyback a Hondata on it and get a tune. And cap it off with a good intake...like an Icebox (a nice compromise between a CAI and a SRI). You should see close to a 15whp gain with those mods...perhaps a few more.

Re: Just purchased 1996 Del Sol DOHC VTEC
I have basic pics from the seller of the car, but none that I have taken on my own. I do have all history blah blah etc...
Hmmm IceBox, heard of it, but never looked it up. I will do my research on it.
As for the exhaust. The reason I want to go with the Tanabe Touring is because I heard it was the least noisy for the Sol.
Header?? have not chose a header, still thinking of the great old debate of 4/2/1 or 4/1

Re: Just purchased 1996 Del Sol DOHC VTEC
ive seen proof that you can gain 15-20 hp on just the bolt on's i listed, and if he doesnt wanna crack open the motor, simple bolt on's can give him a nice quick daily, to have a daily thats not gonna be a full on racer he can still have something to take the hpde's and have some fun at tha track

Re: Just purchased 1996 Del Sol DOHC VTEC
ok since u want to keep the car comfortable and apparently as close to stock as possible i'd recommend a 4-1 header, perhaps a jdm itr 4-1, or a mugen or even dc sports. you could also install a nice intake whether short ram or cold air is your decision... i have a 2.75" cold air on my b16b jdm ctr and it works really well, i personally think the 2.75" work better on the 1600's.
u could get a obd1 to obd2 jumper harness, a chipped obd1 ecu and a neptune board. this will give u nice tuning capabilities.
for suspension, i recommend koni yellow adjustable shocks, they're very good, i use them in conjunction with tein s-tech springs but the eibach ground control is a nice option to use with them as well, as this will give u ride hide adjustability and also u can choose your specific spring rates.
some nice 15 or 16 rims and u have a nice, fairly stock ride.
hope this helps

Yes it does, thanks for the advise. Sounds like very clean and simple mods for every day driving and having fun.
You had to say b16b, my dream engine. : )
Still debating on the header.
I have notes and crap all over my desk about performance parts.
