Just found out something today
Well, I have a b18c1 in my 94 civic coupe, and I just installed a Apexi WS exhaust( Which I am happy about). Anyways, I had to go to the muffler shop and get the piping extended to go to the cat.
After the Muffler Shop is done, He tells me that if I ever bring a car there again with a gutted catalytic converter, he would yank it off, and throw it away. I was very surprised to hear this. I had absolutely no idea it was gutted. Of course he didn't believe, but whatever.
Now my main concern is this: will I still pass smog with the gutted cat.
Also, what are the pros and cons about having a gutted cat.
Also, if it will affect my smog test, does anybody want to trade me there STOCK cat converter for my gutted cat? I would be willing to pay for the shipping charges, and a little extra cash.
TIA
Btw, it a 99 gsr w/ OBDI don't know what year the cat is though

That muffler guy needs to relax, your car isn't a smog spewing V-8, damn. Your car will not pass smog with out a cat.

don't sweat it man. You can always buy a stock cat. Just replace when your due for a smog check. Im sure your car runs a lot smoother with a gutted cat.

From my point of view, if he was that rude about it, I wouldn't take my car back there anyway. A. You didn't know it was "gutted" B. "gutted" doesn't necessarily mean you did it yourself, or on purpose. C. The only thing he can do is refuse your business.
If he were to go so far as to "rip" the cat. converter off my car, and "throw it away", he would personally be buying a new cat for me. I don't care how "environmentally-correct" having a cat converter in good shape is, it's not his place to be the exhaust police. That's why we have emissions testing and occasional "fix-it" tickets when exhaust is too loud.
As far as your other questions... no, you probably won't pass smog with your current cat. It depends though.
Just wait it out and get a new cat when you're up for emissions testing again.

Re: Just found out something today (underrated99si)
agreed w/ the others.....won't pass smog. i got a deal on my cat from NAPA. i got an airmass cat for just over $100+ tax. put it on my crx. worked great. then had an extention weld in to fit it on my 93 h/b. still works perfect.

well, you would be rude if your shop got inspected and was found to be working on a car that has a gutted/missing cat.
ONLY $50,000 fine!
I think I would be kinda rude also.

I dont know man maybe its just me but i passed smog with a gutted cat, i was too lazy to change them and was running out of time so i said screw it and went with a gutted cat still passed. I don't think anyone eles has tryed it but normally a car without a fully functional cat wont pass, but hey its a HONDA

I run a Honda and a 1986 TA,
Think of your local shop owner shelling out $50,000 even if he has no idea your car was modded!
The only way around it is to trailer the car to the shop and it must not be licsence for street use.
A tuned V8 with cat puts out less bad stuff than a Honda without a working cat.

You're lucky, every single muffler shop wouldn't touch my hybrid and all they had to do was install the cat that came with the engine package. They told me they could get fined $5K for installing a teg cat in a civic. I had to go to CDE to get this done. A gutted cat will fail emissions especially if you are in cali, although you might get 1-2hp gain out of it and a little louder tone.

You should drop the V-8 motor in the civic, you'll have a Civic that runs cleaner, and a little more torque

Re: Just found out something today (hybridhondas)
I dont care about american v8s emissions problems. I just hate their shitty quality, lack of turning ability, and redneck mullet wearing owners! I also dont hate utility vehicles emissions, just their stupid soccer mom drivers that are usually talking on a cell phone instead of paying attention to the road. And most of all, about any V8 powered american peice of ****, I hate the way they eat gas, further decreasing the amount of fuel on the planet (alot quicker than it should be going) which in turn is driving gas prices up! **** ALL AMERICAN CARS! I really don't care what people think about this post, I used to work for a shop on Chevys, theyre the biggest peices of **** I've ever seen. People were bringing in Camaros that were 2 years old and already braking down. Sorry if I got off topic there a little, it was venting time for me since I've been at work all day and Im gonna be here another 3 more hours, damnit!
