Just changed coolant..... now engine temperature is erratic
I ran the engine with the rad cap off until the fan came on twice and filled it back up. The car still heats up then cools down, heats up then cools down. Do you think there is still air left in the system?

did you put the heater **** on hot so the coolant would get in there? How is the overflow tank? Full or empty?

I replaced the thermostats and i still have the same problem whenever i rev alot? I did try to bleed the coolant to let all air out with the heater on, but it still occurs whenever i rev alot which is weird since this never happen before.

well i ran it with the rad cap off twice now and filled it back up
i'm gonna try one more time, on an incline, and i'm going to wait for the fan to kick on 3 times
if that doesn't do it i'll thow in a new thermostat

there should be a bleeder valve that you use a 10mm wrench on crack that open and viola the air thats stuck comes out. i have a 94 civic and mine is right in front of the valve cover

its most likely the thermo. its probably stuck open. not a hard fix at all, like $18 in parts from honda.
same thing happened to me a while back, shop did a timing belt change but did not change the thermostat (which they normally do but the shop was 1.5 hours away from me and I didnt want to drive it back), the car was getting horrible gas milage because the car never 'warmed up to operating' and the temp kept going up/down. I drain and take off the thermo housing, low and behold its stuck open.

I just replaced mine recently with new water pump and everything and it still does it. Whenever i drive hard, i see the coolant is being dump to the resovoir tank until it's full and start leaking. When it's too full i get bad overheat.

I had a similar overheating problem and I replaced my radiator cap and my thermostat and it all went away. No problems whatsoever. It stopped filling up my reservoir and pouring out onto the ground....the reservoir is linked to the rad cap by way of a pressure activated spring (or is it heat?) and if it isn't working correctly it will flow all the coolant into the reservoir.

More info on what car we're working on here would be useful.
That said, did you jack up the front of the car and did you turn on the heat full blast allowing the fan to cycle at least 3 times?
If you did all that and it's still not constant then I would bet fault t-stat or radiator cap. While you're in there I would highly suggest replacing both top and bottom hoses.

Not all civics have bleeder valves .

Rofl. I just dont like taking it to the mechanic when i know i can do it. But imma try a new rad cap see if that helps b/c ur problem sound so much like mine. When i drive hard, the car gets heat up, so a lot of pressure builds up and that would force the coolant to go to the resovoir. Once the resovoir gets fill up it has no where to go but spilling out and loosing pressure, then overheat.
That's just my 2 cent theory.

i did the whole coolant system on my 90 Hatchie when i had it. Thermosat, hoses, radiator. Using the bleeder and squeezing the hoses worked fine for me. Of course when you squeeze the hoses, do it with the car off and the radiator cap open. lol

tried bleeding air out of my system one more time and it still cooled down whenever i turned the heat up
bought a new thermostat, threw it in, everything is perfect now
