Just Bought an 92 EG8 LX
I have not had a Tune-up yet but I dont officially own the car (its almost paid off). So once I do, I will do a full tune-up. Other then that the car tivhas had oil changes, gas additives and such.
But my car has a few problems.
-Gas Mileage is 22 city/28 highway if i am lucky... most of the time it is like 18\24
-I Believe it idles high. It sometimes idles ar close to 900rpm.
-After the car is all warmed up, sometimes the idles goes up and down like it cant find a rev point. Idles between 500rpm and 1400rpm, but more recently from 500rpm to 750rpm....

well 22/28 isnt that bad for the fact that gas quality has taken a dive my integra went from around 28/33 to about 22/26 i did a compression check and everything and my pops told me the gas is gettin worse in quality.

Thing that bugs me about it is the fact I see on MSN autos as well as many other sites, that the civic is suppost to be somewhere around 30-35 city and almost 40 highway

ok...got my mileage in....I got 27city so it is an improvement but...
I still want better mpg...what can I do?
Would changing the fuel filter(which looks really old) help?

i mean if you wanna get serious with improving the gas milage, there was a big thread about it on h-tech not to long ago
had stuff like
smaller wheels
weight reduction in the car

try not using octane booster... why did you use it to begin with?.... just run 93 for a couple of cycles... it whould start to get better... yes a clogged fuel filter would stress on gas mileage... and stop flooring it at lights, a clogged CAT would hinder gas mileage, and yes to the new spark plugs, wires, cap and rotor

Truely...i dont know why about the octane booster...actually my father had the great idea.
I got a New Fuel filter... cant put it on due to weather (more snow and rain) and lack of a garage.
Spark plugs and such will be replaced when i have my tune up in allittle less then a month.
after that...when money is better, i'll get my new exhast system

if you are having idle issues then fix those, it will help mileage a little.
if its revving up and down clean the IACV on the back of the intake manifold and adjust the little plunger in the FITV its located under the throttle body.
do a full tune up, filters, plugs, wires, dizzy cap and rotor, try seafoaming it.
my 93 lx (eg8) saw 35-40 all day.

please, no false information, running 93 on a stock motor will not help your gas mileage
please do some research on what octane really is. The octane rating on a gas measures the gas' ability to resist detonation. This means that it can survive higher compression, higher temperatures without detonation. On a stock motor, there is not enough heat and pressure to properly ignite a fuel mixture that consists of 93 octane gas. This will cause worse gas mileage, unburned fuel, carbon deposits and lots more problems. This will NOT clean your motor, making it run better. It might burn so crappily that it will leave carbon deposits all over your combustion chambers, bumping compression a little, and in the process making a little power, but that isn't exactly a healthy thing for your engine

although your advice is amusing and correct..... running a higher octane should not matter on gas mileage, and the deposits of a faster denonation would cause a gumming effect, but i f you already have this "gumming effect due to slow denonation because of fouling plugs,wires or whatever else then a faster hotter burn could aslo discharge some of the "garbage through your exhaust. which later on down the road you may have to change a cat, or you may have to now... but ....i know what happens to every car i have ever owned...

and all of my cars are logged with close to or more than 300K miles on the engines... i know how well my car runs on and off of 93 as compared to 89, i also know the differences between octanes BUT in all of my cars i have, which all have traveled over 700 a week for some time, got more miles per gallon on 93 than as compared to 89..... so go do your own (choose a sware word) "research"
AND most of the topics on here with replies are not based soley on the choice of octane, but it seems like you have based your sole response, to help this guy out to slander what some have said about a couples cycles of gas...

Here are some pics of my car

1st month of ownership
All that was done was my cd player install, hub caps bought, and my automatic shift ****.
Next thing I got was my roof spoiler.
I just did some painting last night on my wheels and some parts of the rear wheel well due to rust. I also painted my wiper arms gloss black.
Pics of that to come later.

Mileage update
Hey all....
I have a Mileage update
ok....filled the car up again and mileage wasnt soo great
-at 24 miles on the new tank a new fuel filter was added.(more on that later)
-I drove it up to 52 miles on the new tank in town.
-Did some highway driving and got up to 159.3 miles on it.
refilled when i got back and i put just over 5 gallons (like 5.0 something) in it....
-so mileage with the 50 in town miles was about 32.
that is a huge increase.

ok... the fuel filter story. So after the change we decided to light some snow on fire with the fuel that was left in the orginal filter...
the fuel that came out on the filter was almost pee yellow....

congrats on the new car! You could replace the oxygen sensor and you could get a couple more MPG. Theres a guy in the classifieds that sells them for dirt cheap. Check that out.

looks like a decent four door. I just traded mine. As far as the bouncing idle. The iacv and fast idle are good to check. You may also have to lower your base idle. You said sometimes it idles up at around 900. If i'm not mistaken base idle should be about 750 +/- 50 rpms. Mine did the same thing, and after cleaning about the iacv and fast idle mine still bounced. No vacuum leaks. It was my idle to high. There is an idle adjuster screw on the throttle body. Just let the car warm up to normal operating temp and adjust idle with a screwdriver.
