I'm not sure "which" engines you can make smog legal, however, keep in mind that the engine is going to have to be from a newer model JDM, with preferably low-mileage, and contain the same, if not more Emission standards than your factory engine; in order to pass the BAR requirements. Also, I'd suggest you drive your car to Nevada or Arizona, and have it BAR legaled, and just pay $150 to get the car passed under the table. Which year Del Sol? If your's is the Si that comes with the B16, I'd recommend going ITR or CTR.

Look into something called BAR or State Referee. When you find out what those are then youll know how to legalize your motor.

I had a friend that had the same problem. Just leave it completely stock. Regardless of what people say putting a V8 cat won't help. Make sure the idle is right, adjust the screw on the air billeting system. Stock fuel railing and fuel injectors and all.
