jdm d16y8 replacment with dual vtec solenoid?????? help!!!!!!
im trying to replace my d16y7 with a d16y8 engine as a upgrade, im going to be purchasing the jdm replacement as they are hard to find usdm. my question is on most jdm engines i see it has 2 vtec soleniods, obviously the one in the states here have 1 vtec soleniod can anyone explain to me if i take the jdm vtec soleniod off the jdm motor and put the one from the usdm motors? i hear something about a vtec-e engine i just dont want to purchase the wrong motor

I think you're thinking of 3 stage VTEC.
3 stage VTEC utilizes both VTEC and VTEC-E.
It uses 8 valves at idle and up until around 2500 RPM (VTEC-E) where it uses all 16 valves then at 4800 RPM VTEC lobes lock and it uses regular VTEC (more aggressive cam lobes).
Though you really haven't seen that much if "most JDM motors are 3 stage" - because the only JDM motor I know that has a 3 stage system the D15B - now I'm sure there's more, but the majority by far are dual stage (regular) VTEC.
And to answer your question:
No (to all of it)
Just get a Y8 replacement - they're not hard to find.

D15B's look VERY similar to the D16Y8, that is a D15B in your pic.

There isn't a USDM ecu that will properly run the 2-solenoid motor, and since you're in CA you need a USDM ecu to pass smog/ref or whatever.
Why dont you just slap a USDM Y8 head & intake manifold on your stock block with a Y8 ecu and there you go? The Y7 and Y8 blocks are basically identical.
Although what I always suggest first is find a Y8 transmission and swap that in, you will have more fun with that than with just adding VTEC and cost is about the same.

p2j ecu, 12 valve below 3k, 16v, regular vtak. the harness uses the same evap system and iac wiring as a y7 harness but has vtach wiring.

If it's the engine I think it is, the head has 2 solenoids for a reason. It incorporates both regular VTEC and VTEC-E systems in it, and each one requires its' own solenoid. Remove one and you'll either have no hi-cam, or will only operate in 12-valve all the time.
