Default jdm d15b vtec - timing belt off

Hi, my timing is off, so im trying to adjust the timing belt a few teeth on the cam sprocket.

I want to release the tension on the timing belt, I can undo the tensioner bolt but the next step according to the manual it says push the tensioner? Please help?? Where do i push its difficult to get leverage down there.

The lower timing cover is still in place I just removed the bung for the tensioner bolt.

You MUST provide all pertinent information about your car and engine. Failure to do so may result in thread closure.

Are you talking about retightening it? Id take off the lower timing cover, as you should when touching the timing belt anyways

Its a jdm d15b vtec 130bhp. According to the manual you can retension the belt without removing the lower cover.

What I want to do is release tension on the belt so I can slip it a few teeth on the cam gear, then re-tighten. Hopefully without removing the lower cover, crank pulley etc.

Once the timing belt has slipped, it would be wise to install a new one.

The reason I checked the timing is because if the ignition timing is set correctly it pings badly, the ignition timing has to be set somewhere between TDC and 16degrees for it to run OK. This is how I bought the car.

Does this sound like my mechanical timing is off?

The ignition timing is supposed to be at 16° BTDC. +-2° If it's running ok there, then no I don't think the mechanical timing is off.

sorry, i mean the timing has to be somewhere inbetween 16 and 0, i guess around 8degrees, if i set it to 16 it runs badly.

fwiw I took a pic, its hard to get the camera angle correct

We can't tell if the timing is right without a shot of the crank pulley and timing marks as well.

Yes, it can be done this way with the cover on, but the "push the tensioner" part doesn't seem right to me. That's what the tensioner spring is for!

Loosen the tensioner bolt, set the timing, rotate the crank counter clockwise 3 teeth (you should see the belt tighten) then tighten the tensioner bolt.
