Default jdm b18b, usdm EG Si, many questions!

hey guys im just starting to take in a lot of info on this subject- i just ordered a JDM b18b and apparently there are some things i need to do to make sure it will run correctly and pass emissions here. my problem sounds like its going to be the crank sensor, it is IN the distributor itself on JDM cars whereas its on the oil pump USDM. so running a usdm ecu would give me problems.

firstly, the facts:

the motor is OBD2, i have an OBD2 harness and i am currently hoping to run OBD2. i dont have an ECU yet, so the ecu will depend on the option that i choose for getting this thing to work right.

so what are my options? It sounds to me like i can either:

A. buy a jdm ecu and run that- but will it even be able to be read buy US emissions testers? how does this work?

B. run OBD1, but what EXACTLY do i need to make this happen? i know the obd1 ecu, but can i run obd2 injectors, distrib, alternator, etc. with some sort of converter harness? can i wire obd1 plugs DIRECTLY into my obd2 harness? i dont know exactly how this works either

C. buy a USDM oil pump and CPS and just run those. seems like the easiest but again i am not sure on this one.

any info is greatly appreciated, if there is someone who has dealt with this before it would be a great help.

It's going into a '92 - '95 Civic right? Run an OBD1 ECU (PR4 or P75 will work fine, just make sure it's OBD1). Use a '96 - '99 Integra RS/LS/GS engine harness (you can't use the RHD harness that came with the swap, the only thing they're good for is salvaging connectors)

Btw, JDM distributors are the same as USDM, USDM OBD2 ECUs look for a CKF sensor on the oil pump, but that's in addition to the CKP sensor in the distributor, not in place of.

thanks very much for the response.

so obviously my swap comes with obd2 peripherals- what am i going to run into if i try running obd1?

do i need an obd1 distrib/alternator or can i just splice obd1 plugs on to my obd2 harness (the harness is from a D-series obd2, btw)? would it be worth it to just trade my obd2 parts for obd1 parts and use those?

if i were u bro i would switch everything over to obd1 it would make everything easy imo

You can't use an OBD2 D-series harness, they're all a 1 piece design vs the EG/DC 2 piece design. It has to come from a '96 - '99 Integra ('00 - '01 will work too, but you'll need to add the tach signal wire if you want a tach) This lets you keep all the OBD2 components and run an OBD1 ECU (remember you're not changing the underdash harness so you're ECU plugs will still be OBD1.

how sure are you on this one? cant i just use the obd2 d-series harness and route them directly through the firewall instead of plugging them into the shock towers? or is it a simple question of whether or not the plugs will even plug into an obd1 ecu using this harness?

also, can i EVEN run an obd2 harness if i end up going with obd1 overalll? or do i need an obd1 harness in the first place?

it sounds to me like:

if the harness is obd2, i just use an obd1 alt and obd2 distrib and then wire in the appropriate clips so they fit the harness.

if i use an obd1 harness, i can use obd2 alternator/distributor and then wire in the appropriate clips to that harness.

can i do either of these without a problem?

Here is the exact swap you're doing, covered in the FAQ

that swap is a little different actually- he is using a USDM motor rather than a JDM, so he doesnt really have to deal with the CPS issue. he also doesn't really cover what you need to be switching between obd1 and obd2, what harness you need, ecus/alts/distrib/etc.

it has definitely been helping me source a lot of what i need, but im still looking for information thats a little more specific to my situation.

He ran all the obd2 peripherals(alt and dizzy), used the OBD2 integra engine wiring harness and an OBD1 P75 ecu.
I ran a USDM B18B1 obd2 engine in my 92 EH3 the exact same way, the OBD1 ecu didn't look for the sensor on the oil pump, so I just never worried about it.

Here is another link, which covers the JDM and USDM OBD2 engines into a OBD1 vehicle

What state are you having to pass emissions in?

interesting thanks for the article. emissions arent too STRICT here (utah), but the fact is any CEL still causes you to fail unfortunately

I'm from just over the UT border in WY. If running OBD1 P75, you shouldn't throw a CEL for the crank sensor on the oil pump. IIRC the OBD1 didn't look for this sensor.

There's no way to connect a '96 - '00 Civic harness to the underdash harness in a '92 - '95 Civic/94 - '01 Integra.

You can use an OBD2 Integra harness and all OBD2 components with an OBD1 ECU (the only difference between D/B series OBD1 and OBD2 distributors, alternators and injectors are the physical plugs, they function exactly the same way. The pics below should clear up most of the confusion.

i see, thanks very much for the pics.

so if i was using ALL obd2 components (including an OBD2 LS harness), the only thing i need to run obd1 is an obd1 ecu? if this is the case it sounds like it is by far the easiest.
