jdm b16a obd1 into a 99 civic ex obd2-b questions
The search engine is down right now for honda tech and I have googled questions and still a little confused. I have a b16a obd 1 motor I am putting in a 99 ex coupe obd2-b. What do I need to wire it up? I have heard you can get the conversion harness and plug everything up with no problem. I have heard you need to switch to an obd2 alt and a obd2 dizzy. I am good at wiring/soldering etc. I have heard to run an obd1 p30 ecu. So what are my options. If I could keep what came with the motor with some wiring that will be fine but I can also go out and buy the obd2 stuff I need so it doesn't matter. I also know I have to get a conversion harness from obd2 to obd1. Let me know Thanks

Re: (DetainedCivic)
so far as i know, you need to change the vehicle to obd1 because of sensor differences between obd2 and obd1. you do need to conversion harness, but you want to keep the obd1 distributor in the engine.

Just keep all the obd1 stuff on the motor.
Use your stock obd2 harness and modify it to fit the obd1 motor(you'll have to change plugs for the distributor, injectors, alternator, and IAC).
Then use a obd2B to obd1 jumper harness.
Then you can either:
use an obd1 b16 ecu and wire up the knock sensor.
or
use an chipped p28 and plug it in and go.

So what is the best ecu to use if I don't want to wire up anything but just use the jumper harness. If one ecu will work better then the other and needs to add some wiring let me know. I was told if I get the jdm p30 ecu that it will plug right in with no additional wiring is this right?

actually, I forgot you have a '99.
So no need to wire up the knock sensor either way(since your '99 already has it).
But regardless, you will need to do some wiring to adapt the '99 harness to the obd1 motor.
If it was up to me, I'd go with the p28 over the p30. The p28's that I have seen seem to make a bit more power and dont have the speed limiters, like alot of the jdm ecus do.

Re: (Slopoke)
I found someone selling a p28 chipped ecu that cuts out the knock sensor, so therefor I wouldn't have to wire it up correct? Plus if I got the obd2b - obd1 conversion harness that should take care of everything for me right? I might have to wire up the correct plugs to fit on my harness because some sensors may not have the same plug design.

Let me bump this back to the top and get some more ideas. I just read a post about someone asking how to put a b16 obd1 in an obd2 car and someone said you will need a conversion harness, obd2 injectors and obd2 dizzy to work. Is this right. From what I have gathered everything can stay obd1 and use the conversion harness. Please let me know whats up. I am gathering parts up now to put this swap in so I need to know what all I need before we start the putting this swap in.

It doesnt matter. You have to reuse your stock harness(which already has a knock sensor wired in it), so no matter what ecu you use, you dont have to wire up the knock sensor.
You will have to change the plugs for a few things. The distirbutor plug and wiring is different. You need to change over the plug on the alternator. The injector plugs are different, and there are certian m 6th gen civic models that use a 3 wire IAC, rather than the 2 wire(which is what the b16 uses). But I cant remember if the EX is one of them.

No, leave all the obd1 components on the motor.

Re: (Slopoke)
I still have the alt that was on my d16y8 motor. Since that plugged in before can I use that over again instead of changing the plug to fit the alt on the b16?
