JDM b16 OBD0 swap into a 98 Civic.
Im looking for info on swapping a JDM b16 into a 98 civic SI (canadian) which has a d16y8 in it right now. I searched but didnt find anything really on it.
The JDM b16 is an OBD0 motor, with a PR3 ECU. I've got mounts from a 92 Integra on the motor because that is what it came out of (not sure if theyll work or not).
Anyways, if anybody could source or direct or even spit their own knowledge on swapping a JDM b16 into a 98 civic coupe that would be greatly appreciated. Im doing this for a buddy and he literally knows next to nothing about cars. I've never done swaps before, ive replaced a b18 and an h22 twice, but never put a different motor in that was originally there. So i need some help.
Thanks in advance

well your obo 0 engine harness will not plug into your obd 2 chassis harness. I think you will need what is called a conversion harness....correct everyone??
not sure what mounts...

Thanks for the reply.
Yep i know ill need a obd2 - obd1 harness, and then a obd1 - obd0 harness.
Most thing i need help with is the wiring and stuff... willl i have to add in any wires or anything? I have no idea....
Oh and btw the trannny thatll be going in is also an LSD tranny.

WOW.... Ur can change some sensors and the injectors and distributor and just use ur OBD2 harness and get a OBD2a ECU for it. The tranny ur going to use is the cable tranny? If so u'll need a cable to hydro convertion kit. U could get a 99-00 Civic Si engine and dash harness and use that 99-00 Si ecu and still change some sensors, injectors and dizzy, either way ur gonna have to change the dizzy. I wouldn't go to OBD0 if I was u.

How can you use a obd2 ecu with an obd0 motor? What the heck would you have to do to make that work lol...?
And yes, its a cable tranny. Where can you buy these cable to hydro conversion kits?
And i cant use his obd2 ECU cause hes got a SOHC d16y8 (shitty lol) in their right now, I highly doubt it would run right, being SOHC, running a DOHC? I dunno lol. IT would probably need to be chipped and tuned.
The thing i like about using this ecu, is its the original ecu for the motor. So it'll run it right.

The OBD0 and OBD2 use the same sensors for the most part, u just change the injectors, IAT, fan switch, dizzy, and crank angle sensor to the obd2 stuff. U could use damn near all the sensors off ur stock engine. I know hasport has a cable to hydro conversion. There is no chipping and tuning OBD2 but hondata makes a replacment now. The SOHC will run the DOHC engine but not like it could b ran, if u want the right ecu for a b16 u get a 99-00 Civic Si ecu.

Re: JDM b16 OBD0 swap into a 98 Civic.
Thanks for the reply. Great info/help.
But ive already got an ECU. Its a pr3 obd0 ecu. Which came originally with the motor...thats why i wanna use it, cause its the matched ecu to the motor.. So it should run it fine enough.
Anybody know about the whole shift linkkage deal? Will his stock civic shift linkage work or what will i have to get? And i've got axles from a 91 integra.. the guy gave them to us when we bought the b16 from him. Not sure which ones we'll need.. im sure theyll work

Yes, those axles will work as long as you have the matching halfshaft (90-93 Integra). You will need a b-series shift linkage from an integra, the stock linkage will not work. Personally I would recommend getting a ECU chipped and running OBD1 just for future tuning.

It can totally be done, but why put such an old engine into that car? I wouldn't!
All B16's are interchangable between generations as the do use the same sensors. Decide what OBD you want to run and get the matching dizzy and ecu. For wiring, just reuse your original harness.
The only other part that has a different plug with be the alternator, you will need to change it.

Re: JDM b16 OBD0 swap into a 98 Civic.
^thanks man.
Okay, weve got 2 dilemmas:
1. The motor has no distributor on it. It wasnt on it when we bought it. So, any ideas where we could get a obd0 b16 distributor?
2. Its an older motor so... its got mechanical tranny cables on it. Its going into a 98 civic which has hydraulic cables. What would be the cheapest/best way to do this? Convert the car to mechanical, or the motor to hydraulic? Opinionnssssssssss.

What ever you do, Find a Hydraulic transmission , even if its a LS tranny. You will be way better off. ( you can sell the Cable b16 tranny and fund the LS tranny ).
Also try and find a OBD1 distributor so you can set everything up for OBD1.

Yeah, I would use an OBD1 dizzy myself as well, and just get the hydro to cable conversion from hasport. It's pretty easy to use, just have to do some drilling.

Re: JDM b16 OBD0 swap into a 98 Civic.
or to OBD2 i ended up going OBD2 on my obd0 motor because i had so many problems I decided plus well in the US you arent supposed to backdate motors they have to be the cars age or newer so for the most part its illegal to back date it but it depends on what area you are in.. I was iffy so i went obd2 plus i like to read the detailed codes in the obd2 system vs the general codes in obd1.
