Is it true that in Japan their emission laws say you can only have an engine up to 30,000 to 50,000 miles?? if so that would blow

yea, its true

its really strict there, here in toronto, we have clean air test, you just have to have your car tested, but in japan, after 50,000km or so, the motors are clipped out

that is how we get all the imported motors.. go look at an engine shop, you'll see that every motor has cut wires, hoses, connections, mounts, etc. its cause they do such a chop job bringing them out.

yes that is true, ALL cars from japan must get there motor replaced at 50,000 miles so guess what you guy when you buy a used JDM engine YOU HAVE ONE THATS LESS than 50,000miles and for the CTR and ITR and most of the BIG time tunner cars from japan MUST change there motor at 30,000 so if you have and JDM B18C or B16A or SR20DET or RB20DETT they all have LOW milage WOOHOOOOO thats good https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emthup.gif https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emthup.gif and for that Ahole that said whats this got to do with honda tech MOST OF use do swaps, so go pull that HUGE stick out of your ass

I just stumbled across this old thread. I was a factory rep for American Honda and have discussed this with many Japanese employees, there is no Japanese law that requires vehicle owners to replace their engine and/or vehicle at 30,000 km, 30,000 miles, 50,000 km, 50,000 miles or any mileage. It's just an urban legend. They do not accumulate high mileage on their vehicles so when one is wrecked etc. the salvaged parts tend to be from vehicles with lower mileage than what we normally see in salvage yards.

Old thread...but I actually appreciate the response given your previous position. I've never heard that was an actual "law" either but have heard that there are certain fees/penalties if you keep your car beyond a certain mileage/age and that's when they (the previous owners in Japan) decide to move on. Don't know if that's true but whatevs...

I've heard the laws are strict, but have no idea what they are. This may surprise many, but Japan "does" have higher mileage cars too!! As someone who began importing back in 1997, I have seen many cars, front clips and even clusters with km's that range a lot! Some only have 20-30k, others have 150-160k. There is not this rule every car gets sold or dismantled at X amount of kilometres

I was raised in Osaka Japan

now this isnt the way the country would say it
but this is me saying it because im from there haha


the dmv stations over there want to have new cars on the roads at all times
to show the world that the country is always moving forward

new cars get alot of discounts at the dmv for this very reason


so if you want to keep your old car for whatever reason
you do have to pay what i call old car taxes each year

and each year the price goes up about 10 bucks american
and the taxes are based off the price you paid for the car


everyone is always looking for the next best thing thou
the only people that have the old cars are old men

and the kids that drive dads car everywhere

You actually touched on another reason I've heard about the "culture" aspect but maybe from a different (accurate) perspective since you've lived there. I've heard the value on older/used things isn't really there which ties in with how you were saying the mentality is always "moving forward" in Japan. Glad you posted your thoughts on this topic.

Shaken Law has been explained very thoroughly. It doesn't state you have to retire a vehicle, it just slowly gets more and more expensive the older the vehicle gets. And inspections are every two years from my understanding.

A guy that is selling vehicles trading up as he goes just sold a used car in Japan on the Discovery Velocity channel. It even explained Shaken there. It has to do with getting tags/plates, your car must meet extremely stringent emission conditions. The older the car gets with higher mileage the more expensive it gets to get the vehicle to meet those conditions obviously.

The combination of increasing taxes with the increasing costs to keep the vehicle meeting the emission criteria, it ends up being cheaper to swap cars every 3 years or so.

That still doesn't guarantee that the JDM motor you are buying has less than 50K miles but it does improve the odds considerably.

Now I'm going to say this really old thread is complete with every perspective represented. So to respect the culture of H-T, I'm going to close the thread to further responses.
