issue with current rims and what are my options? 95 civic lx
Hey guys, I drive a 95 civic lx with d15b7. I'm having an annoying issue with my current rims and would appreciate any feedback you guys have to offer. I have 14 inch alloy wheels on my car. I first believed them to be stock but now I am second guessing. From researching online, I couldnt find rims that looked like mine, that is until I looked at some ford escort rims. I'm 99% sure that I have a set of escort rims on right now.
Here are my issues. My front tires wear extremely fast on the inner side (closest to the engine) and also wear quickly on the outside. When I put the car on the lift and spin the front wheels freehand, it appears that they "hop" a half inch or so, as in moving up and down per rotation. I honestly dont know if its because the rims arent mounting flush with the hub or if the rims are bent themselves. How should I diagnose this problem, and figure out if it is my rims being bent or something else? In addition, how can I tell if my rims are oem or if theyre actually escort rims? Has that even been done before??
Anyways, I want to upload pics of the wear on the tires and pics of the rims themselves, which I'll get to ASAP and do more research in the meantine. Please, any feedback would be greatly appreciated. I cant keep going through tires every 10000 miles.

for starters it sounds like you have a bad alignment and your wheels are out of balance... i doubt the rims are an issue, stock 92-95 honda civic lx rims are 14 inch. others can chime in as im just an amateur

yeah you should be fine with that rim it shouldnt pose any problem. i dont think thats the issue it honestly sounds like a bad alignment and i assume other suspension components are worn out as well

I don't think its something a simple alignment can fix. That was the first thing I thought of and the guy wouldn't even align them. In addition I've tried to balance them myself with a known good tire machine, and it was not possible. I used the correct weights at the required interval and I would be off. 75 to 1.5 everytime. The rim also showed same movement while testing.

did the mechanic give any reason to why he wouldnt align it? red flag* did he say u needed anything replaced??
your rim could be possibly bent? but if its not bent there should be no reason that that rim would be giving u problems unless it was grinding on your brake caliper bracket. you would hear it and notice that though. so i dont think its that.

The guy pointed out that the rim wasn't flush with the hub, that the rims were not oem rims and that it would be a waste of money to align, and that was all he could do for me.

Very useful information. I'm not looking for steelies though, what are my options for alloy wheels? I haven't gone rim shopping yet so I dont really know what I should get. I'm looking to spend as little money as possible for alloys.
Also how can I tell if my rims are bent or if theyre mounting flush?

do you daily drive the car? it would ride terrible if the rim was bent or not sitting flush on the hub. look at where the wheel meets the brake rotor. there should be no gaps. maybe the aftermarket wheel has too small of a centerbore?
can you try a oem wheel (or spare) and see if it helps the problem
also, remove the rim and see of there are more specs on the inside of the spokes (width, offset, maybe centerbore)

you could just have serious alignment issues as far as the wear on the inside and outside, one could be toe the other could be camber, as far as the wheels hopping, i would stick them on a balancer and see if the still hop around like they do on the car, if they dont and the wheel isnt properly mounting to the hub correctly i would assume that you may not have the right lug nuts on the car or they are on backwards, they are shaped like a bullet on the side that goes into the wheel so that they all evenly spaced in the lug stud holes in the wheel, this really is just as simple as going to a local tire shop and paying 20$ for a wheel balance and see what they tell you, as far a wheel options there are endless options but none are going to be dirt cheap, even junkyards your looking at 100$ for a used set of 4 wheels that will probly have at least one bent wheel

Some people fail at reading.... if your tires are worn to the point they need to be replaced then they won't align the car. Second he stated he put it on a tire machine and the wheel was spinning with the same wobble/hop motion.
Here is what I would do if in fact the rim doesn't sit flush on the brake rotor swap wheels with oem Honda. 2nd get new tires balance and align. But let's say they do sit properly get nee tires while removing old tires inspect rims for bends a d cracks etc.

1st get OEM Honda wheels. You can get any 92-05 Civic allow wheel or any 86-01 Integra wheel. 07+Fit. There are some older Civic wheels that fit as well. When you have the tires installed, have them balanced.
Next get a wheel alignment. If it doesn't go into alignment you have bent/worn suspension components. There is nothing else we can do for you here. You have to get correct rims/tires/alignment. That's it, thats the answer.

Are the rik lug centric? Since the hub is not the same size you have to tighten the lugs in star pattern for them to be centric. Bet thats the rim problem

So the guy refused to touch the car becuase the wheel is not flush with the hub? if this is true, this is a big issue.
The wheel not being OEM doesn't mean ****. As long as it fits correctly.
You tried to balance the wheels, but can't? It's time for new wheels, tires, and a correct alignment.
