The interior of my Civic.. couple of questions.
Hey guys..
background info... 94 Civic
ok.. so the bolts on the interior of my car has been rusty since the day i bought it (and at that time i didn't think much about it)..
I always had in mind to replace the bolts.. the crappy carpeting... and everything would be ok.
Yesterday, my friend and basically tore out the interior (to the metal) and this morning i removed the tar underneath the carpeting to find that on the driver's side the floor is basically ******* rust! (not to mention all the ******* rusted bolts on all the rails and seat belts. )
So I have a couple of questions (originally I simply wanted to remove the carpeting.. get new bolts.. get new carpeting .. badaboom, badabing... poof.. sweet interior!
now.. I dont know what to do..
1) should i sand the floor down.. to remove all rust?.. and anywhere else that i can sand?
2) how important is the tar? since mine is in a million pieces, should i worry about getting new tar.. or forget about it and save precious lbs
- my guess is that it is for keeping the moisture away from the metal (am i right?.. is it also used for sound deadening?)
3) honda quoted 230$CND for new carpeting.. (any other suggestions?)
Thanx GUYS!

Re: The interior of my Civic.. couple of questions. (spar-q)
I can't help you in the rust department. But as with the tar, it really has no purpose but to deaden the floorboard, and rid your car of unwanted resonances. So I would get rid of it, you may never notice. As for the carpet, ONLY buy it from honda, don't try the aftermarket carpets. This is why, yes they are molded to fit your car, BUT there are no holes cut in them. This may not sound like a big deal, but when you spend a whole weekend cutting, trimming, and shoving, and it still looks like crap, you will kick your *** for not buying the more expensive honda carpet and just slipping it in.
I learn from experience, you should learn from my mistakes.

if anyone has a better idea.. im all ears
if you mention a tool, please explain what it is..
thanx in advance.

Most auto places sell an anti corrosive rust inhibitor that you brush on for minor surface rust. It turns black when it dries. You should try that....the name escapes me at the moment.

Spar-
I've got a 81 Jeep CJ. I know rust. Its a bitch.
What you've got to do, on surface rust....try to cut it down using some sandpaper, can get it really clean. Then go to eastwoodco.com I beleive, should be the site for Eastwood Company. They sell restoration products, you'll be looking for the POR-15 paint they sell. I beleive theres a cleaner and paint. Check it out and buy accordingly. There are versions of this paint made by the major paint guys, I use something from PPG, but its a industrial coating, POR is a little more expensive but if you dont know someone in teh paint industry you wont find something comparable.
Coat some of that stufff on there good and thick, get the underside if possible..cant visualize where youre talking about, but just do that then stick in some carpet. And make sure to get a good molded mat. I got some ACC carpeting, and I was pleased with it, but there was one area that never fit right in the rear. Just FYI for ya.
Hope that helps.

I used a small sandblaser when i came across some rust in my car. They require a compressor to opperate but they can get in the tight areas. They can also make a dirty mess throwing sand everywhere.
