Default Intakes: is there really a difference?

Hey guys just need a little advice. I currently have cheap ractive intake in my car... (laugh I know). Now I want to get something like an Injen or an AEM, but I am not convinced that they really work THAT much better. I've seen the designs on them, yes they are a great looking intake and I know they perform really well, but do you guys think it's actually worth the money to switch over to a new intake considering I already have one right now, even tho it sucks $hit?

CAI is your best bet. Dont really matter what brand though. Ebay has some decent looking ones for a low price. As long as it goes into the wheel well area, it should be taking in cold air.
(But my friend said the Injen Race Division CAI performs better than the rest).

build your own heat shield and piping from the bumper well, and spend the money you saved toward a ZEX camshafts.

AEM is the best because of it's marketing....it worked, because i have their CAI in my Si. But, i should have bought the Comptech IceBox instead...oh well...i'll just build my own out of carbon-kevlar.

What you're concerned w/ is denser air. As long as you can get colder air (like from the fender well like all the CAI's (except Comptech)), it doesn't matter what brand, or your own. I've seen an Injen plot make more power and tq thruout the rpm band over an AEM, but that could just be for that specific car. All motors are different and for most of these bolt-on products, the differences in gains are from the specific car/motor instead of the products.

if you decide to build your own, use a UNI air filter. it has a better air flow, and cleans the air a little better than K&N. Comptech did a lot of research on which filter they wanted to use. Cmptech doesn't do anything half-***.

my vote is always for Ice man , and there intake comes with the option to run cold air intake or short ram.also they have been dyno proven

has anyone tried the "swiss cheese" intake technique?
the do it your self intake mod to the stock box?
drilling 1" holes into the bottom of the box and using a drop in k&n filter.

has anyone done this?

other than that, the iceman, with the option of goin from cai to ram is a good deal, cuz on those rainy days, u might just wanna be extra safe and just use a ram air.

BHCVC is right, it depends a lot on the base of the vehicle how much an intake will do. Some cars come very restricted and a intake will make a world of a difference, while on the other hand some are pretty free flowing and an intake doesn't do much. I prefere Injen's intakes because of the quality and they also come apart like the iceman. **Just a side note... although many intakes look the same, the bends play a major part. Some company's use harsher bends resulting in a smoother travel for the air, this may be why Injen is putting up higher #'s. Injen.com has some dyno charts if you want to look at those.
Good Luck

I would tend to stay away from the DY Intake... You might not get the performance you think. alot of the design in the intake has to do with free flowing air. Some Intakes create turbulence inside the tubing (especially around the bends) which will prevent the air to move as smoothly as possible. As for is one better than the other... I tend to say no. A good filter is better than a $150 dollar tube. CAI but the 2 piece is the best all around. I was going to say something else but i forgot so.... Oh well...

if ur in for the looks..get a AEM..nice clean install..ive had both short ram and CAI..im really not sold on the CAI yet though it looks good..if i had to do it again..a K&N dropin felter may have work d just as good since the box draws in cold air already
