Bingo.
Intake is an intake. I like that one. Sounds mean.
Buying a name brand is wasting money. There's a dyno spreadsheet displaying the myth behind name brand vs knock-off intakes.

Re: Intake. (ek forever guy)
Unless you want to be anally-retentive and get some zirconium-coated intake for 400 dollars for a 1HP advantage lol...
ebay intake with K&N filter
For a name brand intake all you pay for the name and great fitment.

A pipe is a pipe is a pipe is a pipe.
Same stuff, you're going to spend the extra $100-$300 for a name?
You'll see no performance gain, only "rep" at "shows"

Re: Intake. (ek forever guy)
I regret spending $282 for my K&N Cold Air Intake... Sure, I noticed a difference in HP/TQ, but it wasn't worth the $$ spent. I just sold it to my co-worker for $125 last night and it was in great shape.

I don't see Mugen being mentioned, buy a Mugen intake.

Re: (ek forever guy)
the intake ekguyforever put up is optimal for low to mid range power... if your looking for more top end and overall performance gains as far as bigger numbers go with the standard pipe and filter... not the whale *****. just an observation ive made... its like maybe 2hp tho. lol

Sometimes the premium or name brand companies do indeed put more research, development, and original ideas into their products and use top quality materials; sometimes not.
However, many (though certainly not all) modern Mugen and Spoon products are more about status and name recognition than anything. People that have a lot of money often have more than they know what to do with, so they spend it on things that make them appear to "be a baller" or have "good taste." It's all about perception - if not their own, then by others they are trying to impress.
For example, why would anyone buy a $2500 mechanical watch over a similar-looking $150 quartz watch? The quartz movement keeps time more accurately, and will tell you the time of day just as well as any mechanical watch, however, a mechanical watch is a traditional luxury product that has been finely crafted and is intended more as a piece of jewelry than as a timekeeping device.
Paying a hefty price for some Mugen and Spoon products is like buying jewelry for your vehicle. It may not necessarily serve its purpose better than a cheaper and/or lesser-known brand of product will, but the perception of most people is that it is better in some way.
While I joked about the functionality of the $600+ Mugen airbox previously, it may or may not serve additional purposes over generic "eBay" intakes and make more power with better throttle response; I really don't know, because I'd never plunk down $600 for an air box and I don't personally know anyone else who would. My take on it is that realistically, how much can you possibly gain from modifying the intake tract of a street-driven NA D15 or B18 (very little), and is that extra fractional percent increase (if it does exist), in whatever it benefits over a cheaper solution, really worth six hundred dollars? For me, absolutely not. There are far more important things to spend that money on first.
