Installing a steering rack
The steering rack on my del sol is shot. The shop I took it to said 800 installed and I said no. How hard would it be to put a steering rack in my car? Do I have to take the engine out?
Also, I am guessing the 5th gen civics have the same rack, any other years compatible?
thanks

Re: Installing a steering rack (aemciv)
I put an Integra Steering rack in my Del Sol when I did my swap. When the motor is out of the car its cake. Its like a total of 10 bolts. With the motor in the car, it will be quite a bit harder I'd think.
Was the $800 including the steering rack?

It's not that difficult, but if you've never done one before I would suggest having someone that has there with you. Especially, if you have an airbag. As for compatible years, I'm not sure if other years will work. And no you do not have to take the engine out.....but you will need an alignment afterwards.
Good luck.

What does an airbag have to do with it?

If the vehicle has an SRS, Supplemental Restraint System, i.e. airbags, there is a ring on the steering column that is part of this system. If the steering wheel is not straight and you re-connect the collar to the column, you risk breaking the ring and disabling your SRS. To my knowledge, this ring is not available separately from HONDA.<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by 93eg2james »</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">

I have SRS in mine and I replaced it with no problems. Is there a need to take off this ring? The only thing that sucked a lot about mine was it was a power stering rack, so it was a little messy. Good info, didn't know about the ring you talked about.

No...you do not need to take the ring off....ensure the steering wheel stays straight when reconnecting it to the Rack.
