Default Inspection..am i getting screwed?

I have a 1996 Civic EX coupe 5spd. It went for inspection and emissions(i live in PA) and they want 261 dollars... They did rear brakes and the 3rd brake light the one in side the back window. They said inspection was i believe 80, the brakes were 25, and the brake light was 15. Thats only 120 bucks, Then they said its 141 dollars for labor? I dont no how long it takes to do the rear brakes, but the brake light was like a 2 min job.
Any help would be great. Thanks. OH and i did search inspection and rear brakes and didnt find anything of this nature.

That sounds about right most shops charge 45 to 55 per hour labor plus parts. Rear brakes can take a little over an hour. If you feel its to much get a shop manual and tools and learn to do the work yourself

If you did the rear brakes two years ago. I have a hard time believing that you went through rear shoes that fast. Tell them that you want to get the parts back for one.

As far as the price you are paying for labor, right it off because you should have done them yourself. Here it is $100 an hour for labor. I think you got a good deal.

This is why CA has a test-only stations that can not do repairs. It gives you an independent test. This is so the repair shops can't fail you and then charge you for something that was not needed.

If you have a complaint look around the shop and see if there are any signs that will give you a number to call for complaints. I hate shaddy shops!

My Civic has 187,000 on the original drums and shoes. I inspect them about once a year, and there's plenty of meat left, and the drums look great.

I would be dubious and ask to see the parts he pulled out.

even with this being the case any number of things could cause the rear brakes to fail. cheep shoes/ pads warped drum/rotor or a hung up ebrake cable/ not prop adjusted.

i'm an inspector in MO. we charge 119.99 for brakes per axle (drum or disc) with wagner lifetime warranty pads.

rear brakes go out about half as fast as the front but it all depends on how u brake.

u maybe got taken on 60$

12$ here for inspection, bulb 5$ = 137$ before tax

we definatly dont scam! its too easy for a customer to ask to look or get an uneasy feeling n take it to the Highway patrol. i couldnt imagine what kinda trouble that would be!
