Info notice: 97-00 extended manifold warranty is almost up
Hi all,
For those who may not be aware, 97 to 00 civics (non SI/R) have been plagued with a very common exhaust manifold issue. In a nutshell, they tend to crack after a while. (in most cases they crack right down the centre from the O2 sensor to the back of the mani)
Honda has recognised the issue and as a good faith gesture, they extended the warranty on exhaust manifolds to 8 years from the original date of purchase OR 160,000 KM's (whichever occurs 1st)
For those of you who have 2000 model year cars, this is your last year for warranty claims. I got screwed cause mine was purchased in 1999 by the 1st owner of the car so I must repair/replace mine at my own cost. (My 00 SIR is fine but my 99 SE is cracked)
For those of you who bought your cars in 2000 or in 2001 (note only 1997 to 2000 models are covered under this warrantee)
I would suggest removing the heat shield from your exhaust manifold (2 bolts) and just taking a quick look to see if your manifold is ok. If it's cracked and you have less than 160,000 KM, bring it in ASAP because if you replace that at your own cost through Honda, it is approx $1,300 CDN.
You can do it yourself for about $500 to $700 using OEM parts depending on whether or not your O2 sensors can be salvaged.

Re: (eskimo10)
Don't I know it!
My old 97 hatch had it too and it was covered but the dealership called it a "recall" which it isn't...It's a warranty claim. Sorry for those of you who've missed the deadline, I was P!$$ed too cause the warranty was still good when we bought her car. Now I'm stuck doing my wife’s mani myself.
I would upgrade to headers but on an automatic SE grocery hauler it's not worth it.
(it would cost almost the same though!)
