well no i have a y8 motor do i have to use the y8 gasket or the z6 gasket to raise the comp.

Indeed, what I was about to edit. The D16Y8 gasket can yield more compression if the middle layer is removed. Plus, the gasket is metal (which is better), compared to the D16Z6 one.

Both the D16Z6 and D16Y8 head gaskets are metal, and they are the exact same part dispite the price difference and part number change.
I know this first-hand because i've held both at the same time, matched them up, etc.
Get the Y8 gasket - it is cheaper. That's the only difference.
As far as removing a layer, I'd rather mill the head a bit than tamper with an OE head gasket.

this would be the first time you have ever been wrong that ive seen. the 6th gen civics have a multi layer steel gasket where as the 5th gen and older have a metal composite gasket. thats why they are more prone to going bad when installed wrong.

Dude I have held both head gaskets in my hands at the same time, overlayed them on each other, etc. - the 1992-1995 D16Z6 head gasket is identical to the 96-00 D16Y8 head gasket. They are both multi layer metal gaskets! The composite gaskets are for other engines other than the 1.6L SOHC VTEC.
If I must, I'll order one of each from honda, snap some pics, post them up, then send them back.
See when I was building my D16A6 another coworker was building his D16Z6 with 86 Integra flat top pistons. I ordered the Y8 gasket for my build, and the Z6 gasket for his build. To our surprise they were identical, but the Y8 gasket was way cheaper.
