cops are very savvy in many states to Imports and also the problems we have with thieves... This is a good thing.
to buying a tranny off the street without a vin or some sort of documentation
to cops trying to get our **** back for us..
P.S.
Best thing you can do to your block, head and tranny is self engrave your state driver license # into it so if found, it can be returned to YOU vice being auctioned!!

They are going to try to find some other stamping on that tranny if ther is some (don't know?). Then if they find out where the tranny came from, if it was stolen they will call up the insurance company or whoever and see if they want it back. If not then he gets to keep it. He shouldn't go to jail though. Last time I've read about something like that, the car just got impounded. The person that's in trouble is the one that sold it to him.

fwiw: JDM and USDM replacement trannys DO NOT HAVE VIN #'s on them. what a BUNCH OF BS. the cops hadn't proven that the tranny and engine are stolen. the tranny still has a serial # (barcode). just pay the bail and sue to get the inpound fees back. then sue the cops for harassment

i believe that trannies 1996 and after started having VIN #'s on them, JDM and USDM, someone correct me if i'm wrong. also your friend should have made sure everything was legit before he bought it but as people have been saying, he probably won't get in trouble, the person who sold it to him would.

the tranny does have a vin # it is in the front in plain view if you pop the hood. It sould be a plate on the front of the tranny in plain view.

correct, REPLACEMENT stuff doesn't. his was probably pulled from a diff car, in which case it would have a vin plate on the front of the trans, running vertical in the same area where, if bolted to a motor, the engine code and serial number is stamped.
fyi, if ever buying something like this.. if you take a vin to the police department, the officer at the front desk will look up and tell you if that car is stolen, abondoned, etc. but they won't give out specific owners names.

I think that you should pack a jail bag with your tooth brush and tooth paste and plan on visiting your friend in jail if you get pulled over by the bastered cops in your town. And for god sake stay away from the cop shop
