Default Impact Wrench for suspension bolts

I have a wimpy impact wrench that came with my compressor that isn't good for much. I'm guessing it's in the 240 ft lbs range or less. How much power do I need for suspension bolts? Walmart has good prices on a 380 ft lb CH wrench. Is that adequate or do I need to move up to the 500 at Home Depot? Thanks

invest in something with like 750lb or more

worth every penny

if you trying to losen your rear lca bolt. get another bolt b4 you do!
theres a good chance its going to break if you cant do it with hand tools with a cheater bar

If it is the LCA bolts, be careful with an impact wrench...

did is how mine turned out, granted 4 out of 6 bolts were fine and came out without using a impact wrench.

Basically both ends broke off.

all mine busted too, its common they break and using an impact on them is better than doing it by hand

Spray the crap out of the bolts with some penetrating oil too, The one you have may work but you may have to step up to a 500 to 750.

Agree! I was lucky some of them could still be turned by hand.

Mine came off fine... Pb blaster, some patience, and man power worked for me.

LCA bolts suck
http://www.we-todd-did-racing....D.jpg

I bought my impact wrench from Harbor Freight for like 50$ and it seems to work fine for as little as I use it.

Also, I really hope you meant for taking OFF your bolts and not for putting them on

Put some muscle to it. I'm a very small guy and I can manage to undo and re-install the suspension all by myself.

i work for a nissan dealer and we never use impact gun on suspension bolts because they will break off. of course we use the snap-on 800 plus torque gun. we normally spray with aero-kroil and use the wrench. but thats us because dealers have different standards then mom and pop shops and people who work on their own cars.

As long as I have used pb blaster, this method has not let me down. Use 6pt sockets or wrenches and blaster and you have made the job easy and almost foolproof

I found the information I wanted today at work. The important number is the power the wrench has in reverse. The wrench needs to have 500 ft lbs in reverse.

Actually I just want one for the jobs when one is needed loosening troublesome nuts and my existing gun is too weak. I did my rear LCA's last summer and had no trouble with a regular wrench. The PO did me good on them. Now I'm looking at replacing my front shocks and want a gun handy in case I need it. I haven't even looked at the manual to see what is involved. I'll do that now. The shocks come tomorrow. Thanks

well, for mine the front was a breeze... the only bolt that gave me any trouble was the bolt holding the end of the shock on the fork. It eventually came off with some good old cursing at it and begging it to come off. Other than that everything was a piece of cake....

The rear on the other hand...

Also, i happened to try to use a 240ft/lb wrench today on my trailing arm and it actually got out most of the bolts, the only bolt it didn't manage to get was the one holding the upper control arm to the lower control arm. Switched over to a 550 and it came right off.

Because (sometimes) this is what happens if the bolt is really stuck: http://www.we-todd-did-racing....D.jpg
