I'm New!

Hey Civic Dudes!

I'm new to Hondas, but I'm not new to working on cars. I'm somewhat of a gearhead. As a matter of fact, I now consider myself "cross-cultural". Here's why: I am an air-cooled Volkswagen freak! However, my obsession with Beetles/Karmann Ghias/ etc., has reached a problem stage. To make a long story short, I was trying to make my '71 Beetle with a HIGHLY modified n/a, non-NoS motor that made about 160 hp and probably did low 14's in the 1/4 mile be my everyday driver car. The motor I built and installed in this car was by far the most hi-po motor I have ever built. Not a SINGLE THING on the long block of this motor was stock. There were things I overlooked that I shouldn't have and because of this I kept having failures. This prompted me to go out and buy an everyday driver car. The car I bought is a '95 Civic 2-door, non-hatchback EX with 5-speed. I'm pretty sure this has the SOHC 1.6L that makes 125 hp. Is that correct? As I drive this car what I notice is that it has virtually no torque or power until it gets above 4k rpm, and then it becomes another engine and absolutely rips until the 7200 rpm redline. My VW motor by comparison blows the doors off this stock SOHC VTEC motor. The VW motor makes so much more torque it isn't even funny. BTW, the VW motor has an 84mm aftermarket crank and 90.5mm pistons/cylinders. That = 2.2L of displacement, vs the 1585cc's of a stock motor. If I lined up both of these cars on a 1/4 mile track the VW would put 3-4 car lengths on my Civic in the first 100'. The Civic would never make up this distance and the VW would continue to pull away down the track. Now if the track was 1/2 mile the Civic MITGHT catch it simply because the car is way better aerodynamically.

All this to say, I really like my Civic and am looking forward to modifying and working on it almost as much as working on my Beetle. Happy New Year everybody!

Bring that beetle to me! lol j/k. You simply need a swap. I have the same car except mine is the lighter stripped down version, the DX. My b16a2 makes it a little more fun to drive than stock. Maybe you should start by getting a new powerplant in there. Welcome to HT.

Why would you want me to bring my Beetle to you???

Anyway, there was a question that I had that I forgot to ask in my first post: What is the recommended shop manual for these cars? I'd like to do as much work as I can on this car myself.

blancheEX, your motor has endless potential. you can turbo your sohc for cheap and you will be more than satisfied. if you want the reliability of a n/a car, then you can do a motor swap from either an acura integra or an ek civic si - both are duel cam motors unlike yours which is a single cam. anyhoo, good luck with your car and remember to use the search function for any of your questions https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emthup.gif

all you need to do is get a H22 motor and your volkswagon will seem extremly slow...the torque is great in an H22
