ignition timing **HELP**
how do you reset ignition timing? i think that makes my idle go nuts

You don't really 'reset' timing, you set timing. Your ECU moderates timing idle based on myriad factors.
That said, the procedure to test your timing is this: 1.) Warm car up. The fan should cycle at least twice 2.) Jumper the service jumper on the passenger side above the ECU. (which stabilizes RPM) 3.) Hook up timing light 4.) Shoot timing light at main pully. The black "line" on the timing belt cover should line up with the "RED" line on the main pully, assuming you'r sighting straight down the crank. (Don't use the white line. That's TDC.) 5.) if the red line isn't straight on, loosen the distributor bolts and twist it to comply. 5a.) If you still can't get it in time, your cams are out of synch with your crank. You == screwed. Look at the helms on how to put the cams & crank back in line, and do a compression test to see if you screwed your valves up. The important thing here is that you jumper that service connector. Otherwise your ECU(ecm) is going to keep adjusting your timing and RPMs. You may also wish to correctly set your idle at this point also, and then recheck timing. If your idle is way off, it'll screw with your timing. edit: On second thought, double check your idle before you do the timing.. |
