Default Idol Question -- NOT about the IACV

ok first off, i know there are probably a billion post about how "my idol is messed up whats wrong"

secondly the car is a 93 civic with a ls/vtec swap

ive done plenty of searchin and i have probably cleaned the IACV about 5 times and still nothing has changed. up and down up and down up and down.

so i was talking to one of my friends and he said have you checked your spark wires and distributor? i said no, but would you guys think that would mess with my idol?

but i did recently take the distributor off the head because i was doing some work on it, and i put it back on and i noticed when the idol catches itself, it idols at like 1,500, and when i starts to go lower, which is rare, it starts to like rumble a little bit, like say a muscle car with a cam

so i was wondering if is a distributor problem, does anyone have a way to line up the distributor so it stops doing that? because i have a ls/vtec swap and the lower screw on the distributor for the block is not aligned with the one on the head

do you have a fitv?

have you checked for a vacuum leak?

how do you know that your iacv is good? have you tried unplugging it while the car is running?

you will get better search results if you use the word "idle"

Could be a number of things, best advice in this thread yet is to turn on your car and let it idle for a minute. Unplug the IACV and see if there is any change in the RPM's.

Also, do you have the purge cut solenoid? Goes behind the intake manifold near the brake master cylinder, has a vacuum line going to the charcoal canister near the battery. If that nipple on the intake manifold is open, then you'de idle will be all jacked up.

yes i have a FITV, took it off and cleaned that too, nothing changed.

i have replaced both small lines going to charcol filter as i saw cracks in the line, nothing changed either.

and no i have not tried doing that, i will now

about to go try that now, and what happens if the idol corrects itself, is it the IACV then?

and i am not sure about the solenoid, i will have to check. i will take pictures too

when the car is running, and you unplug the IACV, there should be a dramatic change in idle speed.

IF THERE IS NO CHANGE WHEN YOU UNPLUG/PLUG IN THE IACV, THEN YOU IACV IS DEAD

That is all you really need to worry about when it comes to the IACV.

And if you have the charcoal cansiter, with ALL 3 vac lines hooked up, then you DO have the Purge Cut Solenoid.

ok just went and warmed up the car and unplugged the IACV, car idle dropped down to 1k rpm for a second, then went straight back up to 1,500

and i looked at the purge cut solenoid and it does have all three vac lines on it, which i replaced about 2 months ago

Well, I had an idle problem with my H22 eg, and it turned out to be FITV.
You might wanna try that as well. Since your idle is not bouncing, I'm not sure that's the problem, but hey who knows..

Ok, so your idle IS constant right? it may be at a whacked out rpm, but its at least steady right?

On your throttle body, if your standing on the passenger side, looking directly ABOVE the butterfly valve (opening of throttle body), there is a brass/gold flat head screw, turning this right/left will adjust the idle high/low. I did this with my car running and stopped turning the screw once i hit the correct RPM.

After you do that, turn car off, remove ECU fuse(or negative battery terminal) for a couple of minutes so the ECU can reset, adjusting to the change you've just made.

You can remove the FITV, disassemble, and clean it...which helps out. I've attached a DIY for cleaning it and also adjusting it.

https://honda-tech.com/forums/showth...highlight=fitv

^This is the correct link, the other one was a different DIY, follow this one instead.^

you took of you FITV and cleaned it? theres nothing to clean...

judging from you saying that you replaced the lines to your charcoal canister,( which would have absolutely nothing to do with the idle what so ever ) do you know what the FITV is.

my money is on that the valve backed it self out,

Nothing to clean? Have you taken apart an FITV before? That **** can get filled with gunk and contaminants from the road while the IM is sucking air, not to mention crap from the coolant.

Anyway, rule of thumb is to screw the FITV adjustment all the way "down", or "to the right" to lower the idle speed.

yup i have cleaned the FITV before, its attached right under the throttle body, and i have screwed the screw in the FITV before, i also tryed the gold plated screw on the throttle body and that helped a little bit, but it still bounces and only reduced the idle to like 1400rpm

I was having the same problems as you on my ls. I just bypassed the FITV altogether and that fixed my problem. No need for it in Socal weather. Oh yeah, try bleeding your coolant. I know having air in the system can cause a weird idle.

yeah, well i may replace the IACV, because i was driving around warmed up the car, and waited till the idle started to bounce, then stopped unpluged the IACV and stopped and idled at 1500
