identify this transmission please..
A friend of a friend had a b20/vtec hatch that he recently wrecked. Car ran good and pulled pretty hard so i ended up buying his swap. I do not know what tranny he has but im assuming b16 cause the gears were rather short. I bought this swap for a steal so i can do a semi daily drive build. Third gear was grinding pretty bad when this motor was pulled but a friend will be rebuilding it when he gets back on leave. as for right now id like know what tranny this is again my research tells me its a b16 cable, but is this converted to hydro? pros vs cons on converting cable to hydro?

Short gearing - check
Grindy 3rd gear - check
Cable operated - check
Yeah chances are it's B16A tranny, could be from a B17 also.
Look for a sticker on the tranny and post the number on it.

It's definitely an early small spline B-series cable tranny. It definitely not from a '92 - '93 GS-R it's either B16A or LS, so chances are from what you've said about the gearing B16A. S1 trannys were weak and prone to diff pin failure, it's also getting hard to find parts for them. Personally I wouldn't spend any money on it. I'd bite the bullet and buy a hydro tranny and clutch.
