Identify this dowell

LMAO
not laughing at you, I'm the same way, just laughing at the situation!
sorry, I can't help, not without knowing where it came from (where the work was)
maybe it didn't come off of anything? I've lost stuff in my engine bay before, and found it later - when its a socket, and it says "Craftsman" on it, you know what it is, but in your case.....

If the head gasket has ever been replaced, it's most likely a dowel pin to align the head on the block. It probably fell off and has been sitting between the alternator and block for a while.

Call me crazy but couldn't it be a dowel from the alternator itself? I'm almost positive that there is a dowel pressed into the alternator where the lower pinot bolt goes through.
I mean it's not a big deal that it could be missing, but that's my guess.

Too big to be the head oiling dowel (under cam cap 3) and seems a little too small to be a head/block mating dowel. And I don't know that alternators have dowels. For it's size, if I didn't know any better, I'd say it's a dowel for those long upper cam caps (whatever they're called) but those don't exactly just fall out.

Yes it's not so much a dowel as it is like a sleeve that doesn't make a complete circle anyways.
I think the alternator work and that dowel falling out are probably coincidence. As others have said it's probably a dowel that was lingering in the engine bay for a while and for what ever reason finally fell out.
