Ideas on where oil is going?
Brief history:
1999 Civic Lx
D16Y7/automatic 292,xxx miles(all original)
Only mods are:
D16Y8 auto IM(using D16Y7 TB and D16Y8 air cleaner assembly)
It is driven 198 miles to work, three to four times a week. Runs like a champ, still gets between 31-34mpg on 89 octane.
I replaced these parts because they needed it at 274,xxx, used all genuine Honda parts:
air filter
timing belt
waterpump
valve seals
oil pan gasket
front and rear main seals
valve cover gasket set
PCV
spark plugs
distributor cap and rotor
spark plug wires
AT axles seals/ input shaft seal
Valve lash was set to spec
Maybe a couple other things, have to look at journal
It doesn't smoke, no oil residue on rear bumper, but between oil change interval(whenever the indicator on the gauge cluster changes to red) it is consuming about 1-1.5 qts of oil. There is only a small spot indicating a leak at the distributor(probably the O ring) which I will repair in the next few weeks.
I have yet to pull a compression test, but aside from that, where else could I be looking for this oil to be going?

Re: Ideas on where oil is going?
That seems about normal for a high mile car on 7500 mile changes. I would start changing the oil every 3500 to 4500. its losing it threw the valve seals if i had to guess but I wouldnt worry about it.

Re: Ideas on where oil is going?
THis is for a prelude. ours dosent have the yellow but I know its 7500 miles when it is full red.
The Maintenance required colors
Green (after being rest by inserting your key)
Yellow (after 7500 miles after being reset)
Red (after 10,000 mi after being reset.)
It is just a reminder for oil changes, and nothing else, because the colors change based on the odometer after the last reset.

Also of note Honda spec for oil consumption is 1 liter every 1500 kilometers. If it's burning that or less you are still within spec. Honda won't touch a motor until it's above that spec.
Sounds like your consumption is MUCH less and so way within spec.

Re: Ideas on where oil is going?
So roughly 1 qt per 920 miles of driving. Seems a little excessive. You aren't trolling right? Where did you get this alleged information? Sources please.

The information comes from a Honda Factory Trained Service Tech that I know and hit up for advice from time to time.
The latest hondas might have a different spec but for 92-00 range it's 1 liter every 1500 kilometers.
Oh and before you go and try and slam the tech bit, he worked for Honda for 11 years before opening his own shop specifically for Honda and Acura. So I trust the information he provides. It's also why I recommend his services to people here locally. Same quality work, same OEM parts and much better price over dealership labour charges.
