I want to install a z6 oil pump on my y8 - fitment, pickup, and dipstick questions
im buildin a y8 block and wanted to use a z6 oil pump. i know i have to use a z6 oil pan but do i have to use a z6 pick up? also will the z6 oil pump bolt right up with no problems to the y8. also what about the dip stick. y8 is by oil pump and z6 is by front of car. any help will be appreciated

Re: help with y8 with z6 oil pump
If you use a Z6 pump you wont have a dipstick. Not sure about the rest. If this is about Y8 oiling issues its not because of the Y8 oil pump, it has to do with Y8 cranks only having 1 oiling hole per journal, Z6 cranks have 2. You can run a Z6 crank in a Y8 with no mods.

Re: help with y8 with z6 oil pump
Supposedly the Z6 pump pushes more oil, or at least this is one of the band-aid cures for the inferior oilling of the Y8. Another fix I have seen is porting and shimming the Y8 pump.
The Z6 pickup is probably different. Unless the Y8 one would go on at the same angle and everything so that it would sit just right in the bottom of the pan, it probably wouldn't work.
If you have the Y8 motor apart, you could drill a hole and retrofit a dipstick in I'm sure. I just wouldn't unless you were going to wash the block out after...or you'd definitely spin a bearing.
I don't think I'd put a Z6 pump on just for the fact you wouldn't have a dipstick. I know there would be ways to work around this, like drilling a hole in the block to stick a tube in. Or weld a tube on a pan or just get a Z6 or A6 block

The Y8 head is better. It has a slightly smaller volume, but it has quench pads that help resist detonation, plus you can run different distributors instead of being forced to use a Z6 one or cutting a perfectly good one up.
The "preferred" combination is the Z6 bottom end with Y8 top end.

The difference in compression is negligible. You can always run a thicker head gasket or different pistons or dished valves or de-shroud the valves to drop the compression if you are that concerned.

It may help to restate what remains unanswered at this point.

Re: I want to install a z6 oil pump on my y8 - fitment, pickup, and dipstick questio
I would think not having a dipstick would be reason enough not to go through with this. Again there's not that much difference between the Z6 and Y8 pump, its the Y8 crankshaft that was the biggest cause of spun bearings.
