I want to increase the horsepower on my D16Z6 stock engine
I have a 94 Del Sol SI SOHC VTEC. The engine size is a D16Z6. It is completely stock except for it has a short ram intake. Even the exhaust is stock. I'm getting ready to replace the release bearing, and clutch system with a stage three clutch set up. It also needs the timing belt to be replaced. What other steps should I do to help increase my horsepower? I don't race, but I'd like it to have more of an acceleration when I take off from a complete stop at a light or stop sign.

stage 3? on a stock z6? Thats a little overkill. But this topic has been covered before. If you want a minor boost in hp, the famous I/H/E route is a good place to start. Then you can decide from there whether you want more, which you probably will lol

Yeah mine is for daily driving also, but I was used to how my integra would shift because it had a 99 civic si tranny. It would shift into gears quickly. That's what I want my del sol to do. I feel like it takes a while until it's ready to hit the next gear. If I put a stage 2 with a short shifter, do you think that will give me quicker shifting?

i'd say the short shifter and maybe polyurethane bushings will help you shift faster and improve the feel of it.

def dont put a stage 3 clutch on stock d16z6. stage 3 is meant for high hp when the clutch starts to slip and you wont be having that problem at all. put an oem clutch

if you're planning on something major like boost, yeah a stg. 3 will help you (only if you're aiming for high hp #'s) But if you're gonna stick with I/H/E, an OEM or stg. 1 will be sufficient. Listen to boxeocampeon, he knows whats up. As for the clutch brand, i'm a believer of Exedy clutches.

Great advice guys! I really appreciate your input. I'm going to go with an oem clutch kit and i/h/e as well. If I switch out my stock distributor with a MSD external coil setup, will that help out with horsepower gain?

if money is tight, don't bother with an MSD external cap. With a stock motor with I/H/E, you will see very small gains from it. Save up your money for something bigger. Either boost it, swap it, or trick out your suspension.

alright let me get your brain straight, these little stock motor do not gain much horse power by bolt on intake/exaust/header etc, i say just keep the motor stock. maybe a exaust if u like the sound.
other than that, be prepare to spent at least 1000 for either boost or ls(b18 integra motor) swap
if u dont have that, at least save up 630 for ff1 coilover or something similar and another 100 bucks for alignment susp is more important than small horsepower gain imo.
and replace worn out bushings etc.

maybe a swap is your best bet... trying to boost with a g is kind of hard to remain reliable and done well
shop around and you could get a swap for cheap... i picked up my full b16 swap w/ 60k on it for about 1200 the swap took about 5 hours

i agree if your on a tight budget save that gas with the motor stock, im beginning to be a firm believer of the b series, save all your lunch money for a nice clean swap, i like the ls,
but if you
REALLY REALLY want to add very very little hp for very little coin try the y8 intake manifold, a good header (used i can gind them for about 40 bucks) and a tune up, stock plugs and wires cap n rotor
and just to mention the short shifter, ive never driven a car that i liked their short shifter
two of my buddys had to have them, once they did tranny scratched third dirty everytime they raced, finally got them to put the stock one back in, so far havnt scratched third like they used to,
just my opinion tho
let us know some more nfo tho, if you have patience or money for a swap or what your plans are

Re: I want to increase the horsepower on my D16Z6 stock engine
Definitely don't put a stage 3 even on a modded D16Z6. Anything higher than a stage 1 clutch on an NA set up is money in the garbage !!!!!!!!
Let's take the ACT "sport" or SP line of pressure plates, this is their entry level unit. It's rated for 186 ft lbs of torque, there is ZERO chance that you will even come close to making 186 ft lbs of torque with an NA set up. But people have the mentality that a clutch rated at a higher amount of holding power will translate into better performance and this couldn't be further from the truth. The car's driveability will be harsh to say the least, the pedal will be stiff and the car will be rather unpleasant to operate.

listen, if you want power... I/H/E.. after that, call it done..
you want MORE power, but not wanna spend money on a swap? boost it... $2500 max and you got yourself a home-made kit, plus the tuning ;D and BAMM, 250whp on stock internals.

it is possible to make power on ds tho. look at bisimoto's d16z6 wagon. itll cost money but it is possible to put together a good d series engine

get custom support mods like short ram intake and full exhaust since they can be used later on if you choose to swap. try to plan ahead your build to save money. you dont want to waste money on buying crap your not gonna need later on unless its dirt cheap like ebay stuff.
