Look at your VIN on top of your dashboard, and type it up here. I'll give you the exact answer if you don't already figure it out by reading the VIN.

Someone might want to double check this? EK4 = 4 Door? what the?</TD></TR></TABLE>That would make the EK9 a 42 passenger civic with 8 doors and a hatch for your luggage.
But seriously, like has already been said numerous times over the intraweb, the chassis code is the 3rd, 4th, and 5th numbers in your VIN.

I can assume that "mass" as your location refers to Massachusetts, correct?
If so, you do not (or at least it's very unlikely) have a JDM Civic. In the event you did, you would know because it would be RHD unless modified and it would not have a standard VIN (it would have a new one assigned to it) and it would have cost more and probably been a bit more difficult to register, even had you not been the person who imported it into the US.
You say it's a '97 DX sedan. That means it's an EJ6.
All USDM Civics with the D16Y7 are EJ6s. Most USDM '96-'00 (6G) Civics are EJs, save fore the '99-'00 Si and the '98-'00 GX.

The number at the end of a chassis code does not denote the number of doors, the year (i.e. = 7 equals '97, etc), the cylinders, horsepower, etc.

Okay, your example happens to work out, but I don't want anyone getting confused with thinking that the first digit is the first letter of the country of production.

Actually, most countries in Europe are LHD, not RHD.
