i think my bearing went bad
When i'm driving the road noise is very loud.
and it seems to be getting louder and louder day by day.
My tires have signaficant amount of thread on them.
so i presume its my bearings going bad. (am i correct you guys)??
If so how do i replace them.
and do you guys know how much will it hurt my wallet?
Oh its a 96 civic ex.

Does it sound like a diesel... have you adjusted your valves?
as far as rebuilding
Yes.. it will hurt your wallet...
rebuild will cost about $1000 not including removal and installation
if you have to ask..... you probably shouldn't do it..
but if you want to..
you need to pull your motor,
take it all apart..
take it to the machine shop... have it honed and bored if you need ... get new piston rings... get the crank turned... get the journals ground... figure out which bearings you need.. get some platiguage.
you might want to change your clutch if you haven't done that yet....
and since you are getting a new bottom end.. you might as well get a head-job too.. and a new timing belt.. you might want to replace the waterpump too..
I have also noticed that motor mounts tend to be cracked and broken by this point... so I'd get those too..
now put it all back together...
then you need to reinstall the motor... and break it in.
It will kill at least 2 weeks... 1 weekend to take all the stuff out..
1 weekend to put it all back.. and at least a week for the machine shop to work on your motor

Yes, you might have a "BAD" bearing, but you will not know until you further inspect it.
I had the same noise on one side it got louder as the months went by (sounded something like "WhooooWhoooWhoooWhooo" at low speeds). Finally my lazy a$$ got around to look at it and luckly the bearing just needed to be repacked and not replaced.
Here's my suggestion(in layman's terms):
1) Rasie car on Jack (wheels straight)
2) Grab hold of tire (one hand on top, one hand on bottom) opposite from your other hand !!!
3) Shake the wheel back and forth
4) Write down the amount of play (Minor, Modest, A-Lot)
5) Repeat process on other wheel
So, now to your results. If you have "Minor" it may just need repacked, however if it's "Modest" or "A-Lot" your bearing might be shot or on it's way out!!!
Now, if this is not what you were referring to, my apologies !!!

I will try that, process you advised me.
i hear that from the passenger side.
assuming the worst, i would have to get new ones.
how much would they cost.
or if i only need to repack them how hard is that.
thanks for your help man

Well there is never enough to say when too much is too much.
Here's my suggestion, got to a local junkyard (assuming this is you only transportation).
Get (1) or (2) hubs however many needed approx $50.00 each( this way you will not have too much downtime).
By then you should have bought a NEW bearing kit for your application at your local AutoParts store $55.00 each for non ABS.
Then take hub(s) to a local shop have them press the bearing(s) OUT and press NEW bearing(s) IN for about $50.00 each (Unless you have a 5-Ton Press laying around, then do it yourself for FREE).
Repacking the bearings should be considerably less of course. You should only pay a local shop ($50.00 each) to press bearing(s) OUT then press them IN and the Repacking Kit should cost around $20.00
Of course you can skip step #1 if you don't mind downtime that is.
I would not recommend you to do it yourself unless you are ready to be frustrated for tha lack of tools that you will need for extracting the bearing(s) and viceversa. Oh an of course a 5-Ton hydraulic press.

Long term effect you say ????
Well you will ruin the hub by scoring/seizing it, then you will have to go out and get a new hub/knuckle assembly, probably cost you around $400.00 each.
And your face when you see havy smoke coming out from your spindle assembly or catch on fire from the friction. Know what I mean ?

whoops.. my bad.. didn't think that one through..
You can go to the junkyard and get a replacement spindle off another civic..
as long as it didn't have front end damage you should be ok
